I am curious those whom own a some what newer 6.7L.

Have you removed this air intake (Plastic/Foam) obstruction or have you left it in?

I personally believe it serves a general purpose (Foam)---> Absorbs and kinda holds the oil residue from the CCV & keeps it from coating the turbo.
The plastic piece I believe is only there to hold the Foam in place.

I personally will leave mine in place and once a year remove the piece and wash it in Dawn/Hot water and Air Dry and reinstall.

I have read about the Foam coming loose and not playing very well with the turbo.
This is something to always keep in mind!

If I only had plans on keeping my 6.7L for 3-5 years I wouldn't even care - I would just drive it.
But my intentions are keeping my 6.7L till paid off and many years past that moment.
Thus the reason for my question: Long Term Preventive Maintenance!

I know removing the piece does Nothing for Performance only a slight sound increase from inside the cab.

Anyway: I was curious if anyone else had removed this unit or left it in place.
If you had removed it? What was your thinking with the removal?

I removed it from my 2017.

It's restrictive, it's obviously there to reduce intake noise as the foam has no real absorption properties, the foam will degrade over time and possibly damage the turbo or engine when it does.

It's the blue foam/black plastic piece just to the right of the stock airbox.

I'm keeping it in mine. There has been no proven improvement of anything by removing it. The plastic piece is there to keep the air flowing smoothly into the turbo, it's not there to just to hold the foam. I would venture to say it may even degrade performance by removing it (probably not noticeable by the butt dyno). Either way no one has done a before or after dyno so it's all hear say from both sides of the fence.

As far as the foam coming loose, I'll keep an eye on it but I think the 1 I have seen was such an isolated incident I'm not loosing sleep over it.

I removed the foam and deflector plastic at the first oil change on my 2014 3500. No performance change maybe a slight increase in intake noise, but that is all. Sold the 2014 with 42,000 miles on it without any problems.

I removed it on mine as soon as I learned it was in there. Just the thought of the foam degrading and breaking loose into the turbo was enough for me.

I have found that proper replacement of the CCV filter is more than enough to manage oil mist filtration.

83k and counting on my '12.

Yep, I never really noticed a difference with or without it. I kept it for a while just in case something happened but eventually tossed it when we moved a few years ago.

Thanks!
I’ll just make a point to change the CCV filter every 45-50K miles.

That's a good plan. I changed mine at 65k as by the service manual. and while it showed no signs of letting oil pass, it was completely soaked with oil. I'll never wait that long again.

:happy107: :happy160:

Edit: Done! Both are removed.
Yes - I honestly had a placebo time period with the first run with the piece removed! (65-85 mph 17 mile run on the interstate)!
I can honestly swear the 6.7L is now a bit more responsive.

Marion: Once again answered all my questions!
Thank you Sir!

I'm reinstalling the core tomorrow without the foam & be done with it.

Edit: Plastic core is re-installed - I did actually apply a few big drops of loctite super glue to keep the total piece intact.
