Maybe if you use parts made from Chinesium.
If the labor is 1k both axles I don't believe the gear sets are more than $500 each for the aam parts are they?

Gotta get the master install kits as well, the gear and pinion sets are usually around $400 depending on brand. Then you need the fluids as well. It all adds up in the end.

You need bearing and shim (installation) kits. You're looking at well over $1k in parts alone.

Ok thanks guys...i always figured it'd be around 1500/axle so it looks like that's still in the ballpark.

I remember way back getting 3.73 gears in an 86 mustang 5.0/5 speed. I think the entire job was $500 or something like that. Man those 73s made 1st gear like a creeper gear....it'd blow the tires off big time......if you really got after it (LOL)

That is a great price man. How do you like the 88s? I think you gave one update since install. Are you still liking them? Worth the cost?

Absolutely the best modification i have ever done to a vehicle in my life. I love the 4.88’s. A part if me wishes i went to 5.13’s with my 35’s but the 4.88’s make it a completely different truck in a great way.

Man I actually think mine tows decent with 373s and 35s and I pull about 15k in NH... a hell of a lot better than our v10s did or the ford 6.2s all on stock tires...I would like to swap to 456 eventually but probably won’t bother

Going from stock 33’s to 37’s will play hell on your torque converter. Do the gear swap

Yes I do know that lugging will be the death of this transmission and that a deeper gear set will make a substantial difference. I guess my point is more directed at the guys moving 10k or less that think they need deep gearing because these trucks aren’t capable. I have had 20k behind it (pintle trailer not goose or 5th )and no it didn’t like it much but it did a darn good job. My truck may or may not get gears depending on it I keep or upgrade, it’s hard to justify getting rid of it as I have maxcare and a very forgiving dealership but I do need something better suited for the weight/uses

Before you decide what ratio you want figuring out what rpm you want to be at in each gear at a specific speed. Then figure out what gear ratio will get you close.

I am basically 2000 rpm at:

1st gear 10mph
2nd 20mph
3rd. 30mph
4th. 40mph
5th. 50mph
6th. 70mph.

Wow that's not bad at all with that Steep of gearing to only be turning 2k at 70 mph. I'll have to play with the gear calculators. Id be fine turning 1800- 2k in 6th at 70 with my stock tires...but don't know what gear would put me there.

I know how much those 3.73s woke up an otherwise stock 5.0 mustang going from a 3.08 gear. It made it feel like a totally different vehicle. So i can only imagine what a 4.88 would feel like in my truck with stock tires. I bet i could surprise a few mustangs and cameros...at least off the line.
