That sounds like a dealership headache waiting to be spoken about. How did you break it? Still under warranty?

Ya it’s under warranty,no problem with the dealership .Im just wondering how and why it broke. The truck has not been abused too much ,I had The front locked in and was stuck in wet snow but was carful not to stress the drive line or abuse it.I really can’t figure why it broke.

When you say “broken front axle” which part are you talking about?

In the right situation, it doesn’t take much to pop a U-joint, especially if it’s a little worn to begin with. They are kind of like the “fuse” of the driveline.

If it’s the axle shaft that broke, then I’d guess you either got a defective one from the factory, of the front end has spent a lot of time being bound up.

If you are talking about the axle shaft, I really have not hear of them breaking even under a lot of abuse. I would go with a bad shaft from the factory.

Haven’t heard of anyone breaking an axle shaft on these trucks, and I have some friends who wheel PWs out in Moab. If anyone would be breaking axle shafts, it’d be them.

That said, being locked front and rear can put a lot of stress on the driveline in a high traction scenario, and in the right conditions I could see breaking an axle shaft in snow.

What were the conditions, how were you driving, and what exactly did you break?

Ya just found out the shaft broke, the mechs are going through it right now, seems impossible that nothing else is wrong but I’ll know more later.
Have gone through lots of really deep snow but only had to lock up the axles a couple different times.

Sounds like a defective shaft. Normally those will live through some pretty hard abuse.

If all four are locked up and you’re spinning tires through snow and one digs through and finds something solid to grab, it’s totally conceivable to snap a shaft. The momentum of the drivetrain and the other three spinning tires is coming to bear on the one tire that found something solid to grab a hold of.

Fully locked up and spinning tires fast is a recipe for breaking something.

Our trucks are pretty burly, but on lighter rigs it’s pretty common to break shafts, u-joints, CVs, etc by getting crazy with the wheel spin while fully locked.

Absolutely ,however I don’t believe that happened, the terrain I was on was quite greasy all around and I was careful when switching directions.I will post pictures of the broken shaft when I can.

Truck is all factory so unless they screwed up putting it together should have 4.11s front and rear is that correct?

Thanks. Looks like the fuse (OD reduction outboard of the sealing surface) didn’t work too well, if that’s what it is. Or the shaft was defective.
