Hey guys I have had my truck for 4 months bought a 2014 Bighorn ecodesiel used with only 32000 miles. Thought I had the the truck I wanted untill I put 20000 miles on it now sitting at the dealer because of the turbo underboost code I'm waiting on the FCA to make a decision and they are waiting it out because the dealer as well as Chrysler is saying there is no fix yet. They keep telling me there waiting on a software update. They dont know what is causing it. I'm trying to get out of this truck but feel like I would loose more money if I were to get a lawyer. Anyone with the same issue?

So, when you get this code, does the truck go to complete limp mode, or does it just run poorly?

I do believe it is not complete limp mode from other post I've read. I can drive at highway speeds untill I hit an incline, once I hit any incline the rpms shoot up and the speed reduces. It feels like I'm pulling a trailer with a 4cylinder engine with zero turbo.

Hello Forum, I have the dreaded P0299 code. I have a used 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 ED with 100K on it. I bought it used via Carvana in Aug 2018. Truck has been running great until yesterday. Recently drove the truck round trip from Florida to California. Truck ran great on road trip - ran only reputable diesel/DEF and used Power Service Diesel KLeen periodicially. Was getting GREAT milage out of truck for entire trip. No error codes no issues with engine during trip. Turbo sounded find worked as expected boosted and spun up with no issues. When I got back to Florida the truck sat for two weeks. Got in it yesterday went to breakfast came out started it up and immediately got the "Service Electronic Throttle Control" (Red Lightening Bolt) warning light - check engine light came on as well. Truck was running fine but I noticed Turbo would not spin up. I was able to drive highway speeds with no issues. Crused on flat surface at 55 mph with no issues of limping/white smoke or any other oddity - only that Turbo failed to function. Vehicle is off all warranties so I did not take to dealer because unfortunately my Dodge Dealer in my area is a HUGE RIP OFF. So I took it to a reputable Diesel Mechanic versed on new age diesel engines with all the SMOG crap that trashes our trucks anyway. The service man I took it to ran the diagnostics and found error code P0299 - He told me he cleared all codes and finally determined the turbo is bad. Ordering a new OEM Turbo installed w/ labor out the door I am looking at $3K. He is going to carefully inspect factory turbo upon dissembly and see if he can see any physical deformity or issue, but that if I throw the new Turbo on it will have a 1 year 12 K mile warranty with Dodge still because it is a factory dodge part. My only concern is how could my Turbo fail so fast is this normal? Can you dirve this vehicle 5200 miles and then have a Turbo just fail at 100K? Wouldn't I have noticed somenthing with the Turbo on the highway all those hours I drove it? I am stumped. If anyone can give me insight her I would so appreciate it. I am on the verge to soak $3000.00 into a repair job that may not be necessary????

Well It could be the turbo but your truck is doing exactly as mine did. I've been told over and over that it is a software glitch by the head diesel tech at my dodge dealer here in California. Ram is currently working on a fix for it. There is also a lawsuit being finished with your year truck regarding the Emissions issue which is also going to involve a software update that should be a fix for this issue. Might want to look into it and call FCA about the ill await to see if your truck is involved. Sorry wish I had a straight answer for you but might want to get another opinion before you switch the turbo and drop 3k

I will try and find a Dodge Dealer close to me that can see if my 2014 is part of this recall. Thanks for letting me know. In the meantime I hope someone else can offer a solution before I have to replace the Turbo.

You will have to call FCA directly to find out about the emissions deal. Regarding the turbo I would take it to someone else to be sure

I called Dodge Ram Customer Service 1-800-423-6343 and opened a case # regarding this subject. I was instructed to take my truck to a Dodge Dealer and get the software updated and that if the Dealer did not know about this to call the customer service # and get the case number. I hope this will resolve my issues.

Dhubble, Did you say when you get the error code P0299 that Dodge is able to clear the error code and your truck runs fine afterward or do you use it without the tubo working? My truck does not limp with white smoke or anything and I can drive it 55 mph with no issues other than turbo not working. What are you doing for a work around in the meantime until this recall gets off the ground?

Yes it sounds like your truck is driving as mine does. My truck has been at the dealership for 3 months and they still do not have a fix. They cleared the code but the p0299 code will come right back on a day or two later. They said it is unsafe for me to drive so they are paying for a rental car in the meantime.

I have the long horn larriet - it is an absolutely beautiful looking truck with the two tone cattle brown and black leather interior. So sad that emmissions have diabled this truck - it ran like a top for the 6 months I have owned it. I wish now I would have purchased the extened bumper to bumper warranty through Carvana when I purchased as it would have cost me $1800 and now if I am looking at over 3K in turbo repairs I could kick myself. I have too much in truck to dump it. I will never get money out of it or trade it even across board, and let's face it who in their right mind would even want to ever buy that year with all the emission issues. I may end up eating my shirt over this truck. OH WELL

Sorry bro but I know exactly how you feel. I've been dealing with FCA now for 3 months. They even offered me a buyback but I would be out 4,000 and i just told them i would pass and wait for the fix

Dhubble, Dodge foud the issue. It was not a bad Turbo after all like I was being told. The issue was a loose out hose for the Turbo and it was causing DTC to send error codes. After tighening dealer cleard the DTC and test drove it with no issues. It ended up costing me $150 to have fixed and TRUST ME THAT WAS way better than 3K in new Turbo install. So now I am going to hope and pray to God no emission codes generate moving forward. Have had the truck back for two days now so far so good knock on wood. I am hoping all is well. My only concern is the intake soot build up issue on these Eco Diesels cause gases do not get hot enouph to burn it off. It is a bad design flaw in these Itailian Eco Diesel motors. It will be a maintence headache moving forward. Dodge tried to keep intake lines hot with that heavy rubber isulation - that is not just for noise reduction only - but to help with the soot problem but it does not work properly. I am very concerned even though I have made it to 101K in miles, that this engine will not get me to 300K even with the best maintanence due to the fact they have emission flaws. I wish FCA would offer me a buy back as I am out the money anyway If I have to buy another truck. I am almost thinking of going back to gas to avoid all this emission problems these trucks are having. I do not tow anything and basically use a pick up to haul home improvement stuff. I love diesel but until America can figure out how to make a diesel to run with all this smog crap it is a gamble. USA is in its infancy with diesel compared to Europe, but then again Europe may be relaxed in the smog control arena and maybe that is why they have no issues over there.

I hope the best for you. When I took mine in the first time the said I needed a regin and a new air filter and it was fine after they flashed the computer. A week later it happened again. I really do hope yours is fixed. Please keep me informed. I would like to know how it works out for you. Best of luck bro.

Hey Dhubble - well I am not sure this is good news or bad news. I just traded my 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 Eco in for a brand new 2019 Honda Ridgeline AWD RTL-T gas model.

Seeing I do not pull or haul heavy payload I decided to go back to a gas truck - because all I need a truck for is very light duty anyway.

From what I have just been through with these emission error codes on the Eco Diesel I am too skeptical to hang onto this Dodge as the engine has some design flaws that I am not willing to gamble with. Mainly the intake soot build up issue from gases not getting hot enough to stay burned off and clean.

I certainly do not need emission error codes disabling me to limp to dealer each month. It is very sad, because I absolutely LOVED my Ram, it was the top of the line Laramie Longhorn with the leather cattle tan/black interior. When I would spin my head around and look into the back seat, I always expected Tammy Wynette or Dolly Parton to be sitting there! I am so bummed as the interior and ride was awesome. The truck is beautiful inside and out for a 2014 with the mileage I have on it.

The Honda loses from interior luxury standpoint compared to the Ram. However, I know the Honda will be a very dependable ride from a maintenance aspect. The Honda dealer gave me a decent trade in on the Ram as the KBB was 24K given my mileage of 101K and the dealer gave me 22K. So, I unloaded the truck.

I was given some awesome warranties with a 5-year maintenance plan (just walk in free for 5 years on oil changes, filters and such), lifetime unlimited warranty nontransferable for the powertrain with a $100 deductible and a 72-mo. bumper to bumper plus a warranty to replace high end rims should they ever get damaged/scratched etc. They discounted the vehicle from $39,945 to $35,500 and I got a sweet interest rate of 4% so I cannot complain from the finance end of things.

But still very sad over the whole ordeal! I just could not face the fact the Ram would be running me $$$ in repair bills moving forward with this flawed Eco Diesel. I see Ram is going to pull the Eco Diesel from manufacture next year - they want them off the market due to all the issues and litigation that is currently going on with FCA.
