Just curious as to if Power Wagon owners drive on lake ice. Although our high elevation lakes are drivable during winter, I just don't take the risk. The Power Wagon weighs in at approximately 7,000 pounds which is 1 ton heavier than my heaviest old 1/2 ton pickup. A sno-cat that recently went missing on a 10,200 foot high lake near here weighs in at approximately 15,000 pounds.

Water is dangerous. Add ice on top and it becomes deadly fast. I used to play around with atvs on my lake when i was younger. Won’t do it now that i have a family. Wouldn’t ever consider putting a PW on any kind of lake/river with ice on it. Just asking for trouble

People drive on ice all the time up north. Growing up in Minnesota, they actually plowed roads across the lakes. only time you hear about it is when some knucklehead goes out too early/too late in the season or too close to a spring or other moving water.

As one of the heavier (if not heaviest) rigs in my area, I bring a cordless drill and an auger bit so I can check ice thickness for myself. I don’t drive on less than 15”, and I stay aware of conditions that might affect ice thickness and quality such as flowing water, springs, overflow, snow layers and weather trends.

Last Sunday was a very bad day for being on ice up on the Grand Mesa due to Spring like temperatures and rain. It was warm, windy, and up to 12" of snow drifts around my house from months of freezing and accumulation were suddenly melting way too quickly. Ice dams were breaking on the creeks above my acreage. I had streams of water coming down a field and overflowing two previously dry small canals towards my home which flooded 4' deep into my 6' deep well pit and 6" under my home. Worked all day laying sand and dirt bags to divert the water and get it back to normal. Just a bad decision to be on a lake with a 15,000 pound track vehicle on that winter day. I wasn't up there at 10,000 feet to see first hand the conditions on Island Lake near the summit. At my 4,000 feet lower elevation it quickly changed from a frozen terrain to a muddy, slushy nearly impassable mess. Otherwise, the ice up higher is solid and good when it's below freezing.KIMG0553.jpg

Another thing to think about, your vehicle insurance may not cover anything if you break through the ice.
Your local Department of Natural Resources may want to leverage a fine against you for polluting the water too, similar to if a boat sinks.

I just read they found the sno-cat 65’ down with both occupants outside the machine on the lakebed. Sad deal all around....
