It lugs quite a bit i usually put it in manual in 5th to keep it from lugging and constantly down shifting

Pretty much the same here. In stock configuration, my power wagon at normal cruising speed (60+-), 6th gear is almost a joke. If its not flat ground or slight downhill, might as well stick it in 5th.

These gas trucks with this trans should have 4.56 gears minimum.

Our 66RFE’s have the same exact gear set as the 68 that is in the cummins equipped trucks.

The gear ratios are not right in any way.

The truck relies on “kick down” way to much

I run 35’s with 4.88 gears and it is much better. But in the end this truck still has the wrong trans.

FCA ****** up big time.

Take this for what it's worth and it's worth all you payed for it. There are many people saying go 488. Most of them seem to have 6.4ls (as do I). Your profile says 6.7l diesel. IMO, with your tires plus diesel, 456 is more than enough. 4.10 is probable better, but it (again IMO) it is not worth paying the frog skins for a 3.73 to 4.10 chance.

So in short, keep the 3.73 or 4.56 max. If it were me, I'd prob keep the 3.73 and get a tuner

Excellent thank you
How does your truck run down the highway with the 456 i see you have 37's
I have 35's so my rpm would be a little higher
I don't plan on bigger tires i just think the 456 would make a big difference over the 373 and make things easier on the drive train
If you did it again would you choose the 456 again with the 37's
Thanks again
It's a huge difference. It runs great on the highway approx 2200 RPMS at about 80 MPH. I think I would have loved the 4.88's too. Just depends on what you are looking for. The truck is also tuned 93 oct HEMIFEVER,Moes 87 mm TB,cold air intake, and pedal commander.

I just used the chart to see what RPMS I wanted to be at with my tire size and made my decision.

From Michigan cant help with the shop sorry. I did 4.56s on my 2016 2500 with the 6.4. I'm running 37s and I love them. Either one you go with you will not be disappointed. I have Nittro gears in the rear and it is noisier than the stock nothing crazy but noticable. Was able to use a GM gear set in the front.
I'm in michigan also and was wondering what shop you used as I'm planning on doing this in the spring. I'm just outside of Flint.

It's a family owned place. I would say just about an hour and half from you. Very knowledgeable.Screenshot_20190223-082158_Chrome.jpg

Finally found a shop here in Missouri. Dropping it off this week. They are pricy. 3300. But this is the only place I found on the east side of the state. Dealer wants 4500 and only to 4:10.

I was thinking 4:56 but after reading this forum I’m thinking 4:88. Running stock tires and towing a 11k 5th wheel soon. Plan on moving the trailer to and from the south snowbirding.

See what the break down is on parts and labor costs.
Typical labor cost for regearing should only be $375-$475 per axle.

I know the newer parts are priceier than the old stuff. My ‘99 1/2 ton was $1500 to go from 3.55 to 4.10, that included gear sets, install kits, front carrier, & oil.

Also see if the shop will let you supply the parts as well. Some do some don’t.

Ask the shop to take a backlash reading for each old gear set, then ask for the old parts. Used gear sets always sell, but it’s nice to know what B/L they were at to reset them to.

I stand corrected, that’s a great one.

Alligator Performance has both gear kits & installs for $1325. You should be out the door with installation for another $1k.
$3k plus is insane.
