I had a 2011 Ram 3500 and changed oil when the message came up to change it around 7000 miles. I now have a 2018 Ram 3500 and it has over 9000 miles on it and the oil gauge says it still has 50% oil life left. Can this be right?

Per the manual the cummins is 15,000 miles and that is when I do mine.

That sounds about right. The newer 6.7s don't have the oil dilution problems that the earlier ones did.

I pretty much drive my truck only when I am pulling my fifth wheel camper, so I dont do a lot of miles. I kinda fall into the fact I need the oil changed every year, just because it sets. not following the oil life gauge.

I have an 11 CTD and I change the oil every 5,000 miles. I would do the same if I had a new one because oil isn't as expensive as these engines. I figure the manufacturer is in business to sell more vehicles and they probably don't want them lasting 1,000,000 miles but I do.

I signed up to the forum just to say I agree with you Dennis. Mine has to last as long as I do, I sure can't afford a new one.

That is a ridiculous assumption. Guys that have sent their 15K oil out for analysis have found the oil is quite healthy. There are many threads about this on the Cummins forum.

From my 2016 RAM owner's Manual - Diesel Supplement for 2500/3500/4500/5500

Oil Change Indicator System — Cummins Diesel

Your vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. This system will
alert you when it is time to change your engine oil by displaying the words

Your authorized dealer will reset the oil change indicator message after completing the scheduled
oil change. If a scheduled oil change is performed by someone other than your authorized
dealer, the message can be reset by referring to the steps described under “Electronic Vehicle
Information Center (EVIC)” or “Driver Information Dis- play (DID)” in “Understanding Your
Instrument Panel” for further information.

Replace the engine oil and oil filter every 15,000 miles (24 000 km) or six months, or sooner if
prompted by the oil change indicator system. Under no circumstances should oil change
intervals exceed 15,000 miles (24 000 km) or six months, whichever comes first.

NOTE:

Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or six
months or 500

Hours, whichever comes first.

My son and I have Cummins, his a 5.9L and mine a 6.7L. We both change oil every 5,000 miles, and I don't care what is written in a manual. Neither of us run synthetic oil, maybe if we did our oil changes would be less often. Shell Rotella T4 15W40

Yeah I’d run the cheapest oil possible putzing around in a smoker for 6 months.
