Hi

I’m rebuilding a Laramie ram 1500 with my son.

The hood need a bit of patching and to be repainted.

My son likes the SRT hood with the air scoops.

Can one be directly swapped with the on the Laramie?

Are the scoops functional or just fake?

Thanks for the advice.

Alex

Scoop or scoops (1 or more than 1)? If it's the OEM SRT hood (1 scoop like my truck below) then yes, that is directly swappable for 02-08 1500's and 03-09 2500/3500's. If it has more than one scoop then it's either aftermarket or a 4th gen hood.

One scoop.

Does the scoop do anything?

Beautiful truck.

Back in the day the SRT scoop caught the attention of a small aftermarket company who came up with an intake that utilized cold air from the scoop. The intake was built specifically to deliver cold air to the V-10 intake configuration.

They haven't been around in a while but if you remove the block off plate and install some mesh to keep out the larger crap and bugs, it will help to keep the engine bay cooler which helps keep the engine and every thing else under the hood cooler.

I put on an OEM SRT hood on my 2007. I did not open up the hood scoop. Rather, I used an AFE cold air intake that took air from behind the passenger side fender.

If it's an actual SRT hood, the scoop is open. On the SRT's it was used to provide airflow around that big V10. An air intake can be fitted to draw air straight from it. Tray Burge did a hell of a job with one.
And thanks!

Me too, took a few years to get them. I had to settle for the 4th gen chrome clads for a while since everyone wanted an internal organ for used ones for the longest time. I lucked out with these.

The only versions that got block off plates were OEM installs on Daytona trucks. Both Mopar and Volant offered air ducting for that scoop, but it went sideways to the stock airbox in both cases.

I did the SRT hood on my 03 SLT. I had it opened up to the engine compartment. Installed the MOPAR Cold Air package which was stock air filter box delete and relocates the dry filter on the right side fender well area behind the head light. There is a pop rivet installed plenum on the underside of the hood made of abs plastic (or similar material) that directs hood scoop air to the CAI filter area,..or at least that is the idea. The plenum, if memory servres, was almost as much money as the hood ($500.00?). Loved the look and still do. My hood install included the SRT front bumper cover also. This took place in 2010.

I ended up with a filter box setup that was actually designed for a specific aftermarket hood but works fairly well for the time being:

It'll stay there til it's time to do the eagle top end and cam swap. Then I have a 4th gen Vararam that will mate with the hood even better on that manifold.

Thanks HemiLonestar for that "shout out". I sure wish you could still get that "6 pack" one piece hood that goes with your (HemiLonestar) filter box, but I guess production couldn't keep up with demand or maybe it was a quality issue?
However, I'll spill the beans here, I've ordered a six-pack scoop with internal flange to mount to my truck and will do major modification on the hood to keep it functional and have a direct air source for my set-up. I've always loved the profile of the 6-pack scoop on these trucks. It'll just bolt on, no bondo or filler to eventually crack, should look factory with the internal flange.

Hi and sorry for the bother,
is the orange air system in the picture an existing product or a modified vararam system for the 4th gen dodge ram installed on the 3rd gen.?
I like it much much better the the vararam for the 3rd gen.
Tnx. !

It's a 4th gen Vararam, he fabricated that lower scoop you see.

No bother at all brother, like HemiLonestar said in his post, I fabricated the orange intake myself. The Vararam is a 4th gen that I reengineered to fit/work on my 3rd gen also. I had to fab up different bracketing to hold it on, move my overflow tank to make room and fab a 90 degree elbow that went around the AC lines to fit our throttle body that comes straight out, as you already know probably. Oh yeah, I had to build up the rubber seal to meet up to the bottom of my hood too. I too didn't care for the "Hemi Under Glass" for the 3rd gens either, I wanted something that looked more old school.

Hi,
HemiLonestar & Tary Burge thank you for the replies!
Not enough problems in life is/causes problems :)
I'm trying to choose the 'best' air system for a 5.7 hemi equipped with the srt10 hood
But it was not yet born:)
Tray Burge, I salute your accomplishment, it's a great piece of engineering & design but by far I'm not going into this 'film' at the moment.. I have too many other 'truck priorities' to sort out before (all of them being just a 'time filler' between missions i get from the wife :)

Keep the one you have; actual SRT-10 Rams didn't have an air intake mated to the scoop. Those engines would get HOT (hence the extra oil temp gauge they came with on the A pillar), the scoop was literally just to push cooling air under the hood.

Oh Hell yeah! I didn't realize you had an SRT-10! Leave it alone and keep it stock, those will be very collectable "one day," trust me, even with the production numbers of them being built. Mines just a plain Jane SLT short cab.
Post some pictures, please.

I don't think he does, I was just referencing the fact that the Viper trucks didn't actually use the scoop for intake air

Hmmmm.... Vrrmmm..
Sadly, partially, i have a 5.7 hemi (slt big horn)
Equipped with an srt10 hood (as i wrote )
True, the srt10 is a wet dream for me, but I preferred the 4x4 because we get an even amount of snow/ice in the winters here in europe
