Thought I'd share this with the forum, the Ecodiesel lower airbox takes the same air filter and top lid as the 5.7 trucks but has an inlet that is roughly 50% larger. The part numbers for these are:

Inlet: 68190706AB
Lower Box: 68232657AC

Links to where I got them:
https://parts.allmoparparts.com/oem-parts/mopar-air-inlet-duct-68190706ab
https://parts.allmoparparts.com/oem-parts/mopar-air-cleaner-body-68232657ac

I took a pic of my Trinity with some air intake PIDs to show it flows really well.

These parts cost around $60. So for those that want to keep things all factory parts but want to have a better flowing intake without spending hundreds this is a good choice.

Please note this is not needed on the 6.4 trucks as they already have a lower intake box that uses the bigger Ecodiesel inlet tube.

You can see by the "P-RAT MAP BARO" pid that it hit 1.00 which means the engine is getting air equal to barometric pressure. This means the intake has virtually no measurable restrictions. The OAT was about 35* that day which means the engine is injesting air 7* above ambient temp. "MAP VAC" goes down to almost 0 almost every time the throttle is pressed confirming the P-RAT value.

And correct me if im wrong Cory but the Eco-Diesel and the 6.4 Hemi share the larger sized opening in the airbox. So this modification ONLY pertains to the 5.7 guys...

Correct?

Well THAT figures..lol, after I got a vararam. And me with a custom painted oem cover!
Isnt the opening in the fender the same size thereby restricting flow through that opening?

Yeah the fender opening is the same. However the factory 5.7 inlet tube takes the fender opening and makes it smaller where it goes into the airbox. The Ecodiesel inlet tube stays the same size as the fender opening right into the airbox.

LOL well the Vararam is definitely a better flowing intake than this. I have one as well and the intake temp cools down much quicker when you're going down the road than the stock Ecodiesel lower box/tube...

Ah sorry, I missed your inlet tube pics!
Thats a big improvement in airflow for pretty cheap as opposed to aftermarket! Even the 3" add a tube I added to my oem box made a difference

Hemi,
Great find... great write up. Think u just saved me so money and less worry with my maxcare lifetime warranty as I’m sure they wouldn’t really notice it.

Are you using the stock filter?

Thanks for coming up with this idea. Also thanks for taking time to see how the intake is performing with your trinity (therefore preventing questions of but does it work better). Helps that you have had s&b and veraram before too. I know from when I was considering ED vs 5.7 the stock system in the ED flows enough for the those putting big tunes in. So this is great that we can piece together a “sleeper” intake with OEM parts.

No problem man, I kind of figured it had something to do with the 3.0 being turbo why they made it bigger.

Would the EcoD/6.4 filter flow better or filter better than the 5.7 ?

I need to change mine soon and might do this complete upgrade you found

Do you have part numbers for the filters?

I currently am running this filter for the 5.7:
68441762AA

The filter for the 6.4/3.0 is:
68190705AA

The only difference I can see between these 2 filters is the 6.4/3.0 has taller pleats making the overall filter thicker. The other dimensions are identical. Not sure if the taller pleats are for more flow or not....

Thanks, I need a new filter anyway so just curious if this other filter would be an upgrade, lateral or downgrade lol

That’s absolutely what it means.

Short pleats means a give required amount of air (demanded by the engine) has to move through less available air passages in the media to get to the combustion chamber.

Taller pleats = more area and air passages in the media for the same amount of air to move through=less resistance and better flow.
