I am curious to know what everyone traded in for their new trucks? I looked at some of the new ones and I am not sure if I want to pull the trigger. I have a 2015 Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel with 37700 miles and I don't know if I would trade it. My truck runs great and does not give me any problems. I am asking because I thought of trading for a new 2500 with the 6.4 Hemi, I don't do much heavy towing anymore. I am in a good situation with my payoff and mileage on my truck, it is just getting a dealer to give me a good price for my truck.

I will be trading in my 2018 mega 6.7 for a 2019 2500 6.4.

Paid cash and then sold my Frontier to my daughters fiancé.

Why do anything? You have a low miles four year old trouble free truck. Certainly gas vs diesel is a difference and 2019 is the new gen. But still. Just bored with it?

Why?

I’m curious why people trade nearly new for new. Circumstances and needs change? It didn’t work for you as you hoped?
The Ram is great, first one in a long time, and I just wasn't happy with the 2017 Ford I had. I got a good deal on the mega because my friend runs the Ram dealer. This time I want to order Ram boxes for sure, I prefer the fold up rear seats of the CrewCab, I prefer tradesman level options, and I want to go back to gas. For my business trading every 1-2+ years works out.

I traded in a MY 15 ED for MY 19 HEMI. ED was a great truck, but MX expensive and since I basically do very little towing, the ED did not fit my needs any more....

But it was a Great Truck, had zero issues, just did not need the Diesel ne more.....

That makes sense if a daily driver and used as a business vehicle.

I've never traded in a truck. Our son got the 91 Nissan; it was stolen in San Diego. He then got the 78 Chevy that he sold when he bought a newer truck. The '05 Colorado we bought new survived me and three teenage drivers until my youngest daughter totalled it in '12. I replaced that with a '08 Frontier that as I said I sold to family and now we have the Ram.

We do - the taxable part of the sale is (sale price - trade in), and I live in a 10% sales tax area (no income tax though!), so a $10K trade in would have saved me $1000 in taxes. And the math also says you have to get at least 10% more out of a private sale to be break-even vs. trading something in.

I've just never had a truck to trade in except for the Frontier, and I preferred selling it to my future son-in-law (wedding is in June) than just watch it go. He jumped at the chance. :)

Ah gotcha, I'm always curious to see other peoples strategies in other states but there's just so many variables. I've gone both ways, here in NY for my county it's 8% sales tax (with high taxes on everything else) so if the vehicle is worth anything substantial it is worth it financially to trade in, but I've certainly sold some vehicles privately as well. That's a pretty awesome thing you did for your son in law.

2 '14 Jeeps, both paid for. Only had a $6k diff. on the new truck. We should have bought a truck/ camper combo in the begininng. Found out quick the 3k# max towing was a joke.

I should have done my homework.... Before moving, I sold my 14 Ram 2500 in Alaska because it was more truck than I needed anymore and figured I'd buy a new 1500 when I got to Washington. Had I realized that I'd be paying over $5k in tax, I either would have kept it and traded it in, or at the very least, not given the guy I sold it to such a good deal..... I have an 03 Toyota Tacoma that I had planned on trading in as well, but it's such a fun beater with a heater that I couldn't bring myself to parting with it.

Yeah that's quite the extra amount to have to pay on top of the price of the truck, taxes can be ridiculous. I'm shocked they give us the trade in credit here but I'll gladly take it. Can be tempting to sell privately if you can get more for it than trade in value, but in states like ours you'd need to get a lot more to offset the tax difference. And yeah I can't blame you on the taco, I think I'd prefer to keep it around as well.

I'd like save that sales tax money too. I'm moving to Alaska in July and I'd like to wait to get there to buy a new 2500 but I need a truck to pull my 7,000 lb TT from Texas.

Traded in a 2014 Ram QC Express(Black Package) with the 5.7/8 speed/and 3.21.
The truck looked, sounded and ran good, but I regretted ever buying a half ton. I tend to use my trucks as trucks and this thing wasn't so great off road. By the time I added lift and tires I'd be out $5k and then you have the reliability issue with that. I was able to get the truck completely paid off (without carrying any negative equity), so I figured I better jump before the NADA takes a nose dive.
The 6.4 w/8 speed is a hoss.

All of the above. much more off road than i thought, and the mods (while they look good to me) aren't quite as capable as starting with a purpose-built truck

Back in 2016 I traded my 2006 5.9 Cummins Mega cab for a 2016 6.7 Cummins Mega cab. With the pricing of the 2019's I'll be keeping my 2016 for a while I think.

I hear ya. You might look into renting a truck to drag it up. Put the wear and tear on their rig. When I moved down, I rented U-Haul's biggest moving van and their biggest trailer and it was less than the tax I paid on that Ram..... Looking at U-Haul, I think they only rent 1/2 tons, but looks like Enterprise rents 3/4 and 1 ton rigs. Just a thought.....
