I wanna change my diff oil but I'm not sure if it is a LSD or not. It's a 2WD with a 3.55 axle ratio and when I check with my VIN I find this:

DBA ALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS
DG1 6-SPD AUTOMATIC 645RFE TRANSMISSION
DMD 3.55 REAR AXLE RATIO
DRN 245MM REAR AXLE
DS8 CONVENTIONAL DIFFERENTIAL REAR AXLE ----> seems not to be LSD

What do you think guys ?
Which oil I have to use ? 75W140 but I don't need to add the LS additive?

Open, you wont need additive. I don't know if they put lsd on the addon side of the sticker or not, Anyhow, either way lsd or not this oil will work. gl-5 hasn't been updated for many many years, so they don't update oem's because it is still the same oil. You san email Dave at redline, he would give you exact info. That is the oil that I know a lot of guys run in the open diff or lsd, and on specs section is spec'd for Ram.

You have an open diff (mentioned already)

I don't believe the friction additive is required in the anti spin (LSD) since it is a helical style rather than having clutches- so don't sweat it.

Open to correction if I am wrong.

The OP has a 1500, they have clutch type LSD from the factory. The Helical gear style LSD are on the HD trucks.
Any of the good synthetic axle gear lubes are available with the friction modifier already added and it doesn't hurt anything to run it in open or gear type differentials.

Ok thanks guys for the advises but what is the difference between limited spin and open differentials?

A limited slip uses either clutches or gearing to distribute torque to both wheels. Power will be sent to both wheels irregardless of traction. If you do a burn out, you'll get two black marks from the tires.
With an open differential, the wheel with the least amount of traction will spin. If you do a burn out, you'll get one black mark. Usually the right wheel spins due to rotation direction of the driveshaft "lifting" the wheel up.

Plenty of videos on YouTube, but this is my favorite on how a open differential works.

So if your are stuck you better have a LSD than an open diff ? With an open diff you stay stuck ?

From my Jeepin days, lsd is better for offroading, but lockers are way better.

I have an open differential. I got rental with a limited slip and it makes street driving much better. With 400lbs of torque going to one wheel it sucks.

As for offroading in a ram I wouldn't know. I broke my bumper the first time I went hunting. Not going to attempt offroading in my ram.

Yes, u are 99.9 % correct, except. Power is not sent to both wheels regardless of traction. If you are driving down the road on dry pavement with an lsd, only one wheel is pulling, namely the right rear. The lsd only engages when the right rear wheel loses traction which engages the clutches and sends torque to the left axle. It happens very fast.

Why are you changing the rear dif fluid? It is not recommended by Ram for their 1500, 2500, or 3500 model trucks. If the differential is repaired or gears are changed then with a limited slip differential Ram specifies using their Limited Slip Additive along with the standard lubricant.

Service Schedule

❏ Change the engine oil and engine oil
filter.
❏ Rotate the tires, rotate at the first sign of
irregular wear, even if it occurs before
72,000 miles (117 000 km).
❏ Lube the front drive shaft fitting
(2500/3500 (4x4) models only).
❏ Inspect the CV joints.
❏ Inspect exhaust system.
❏ Inspect the front and rear axle fluid,
change if using your vehicle for police,

Checked my diff oil yesterday : looked nice and clean but it was thick as honey and smelled like mint. Is that normal? The new oil in the can is way thinner and smell oil... is the LSD additive doing that ?
