Ecodiesel Reability? 2014-2016?

If 95% of your driving habits consist of just putting around town, the eco diesel may not be the best choice. I’ve seen far to many have emission issues due to a life of nothing but city driving.

If you drive a mix of city and highway every now and then or mostly highway you shouldn’t have any emission issues.

I bought mine on 12/26/17. I truly loved the truck. It had a measly 63000 on it when I purchased it. At 68000 the engine lost the lower end. I bought this as a “certified pre-owned vehicle”. The day I purchased it the oil change indicator started going off on me. I did some research and decided on the Rotella 5w30 T6. As I have done Maintbto all my vehicles I was the one who changed the oil. While it was a tremendous inconvenience when the lower end did its thing. I have to commend Ram, Chrysler, and the dealership in Ada Oklahoma. I purchased my truck over 200 miles from where I lived. And I called the Ada dealership as they had helped me with another problem I had earlier and I liked the Service I got. Well to make a short story longer. My engine was replaced with a new one including the turbocharger. The only comment I got from the service manager was the oil was even clean. It cost me not one red cent and they produced a 2018 Wrangler for me to drive as a loaner. At any rate I wrecked that truck and totaled it in August of this year. My truck saved my life and gave up its own in the process. Now I am looking for another.

I bought mine because my company owns a construction company and all of the superintendents run these and really love them. Great mileage, they do long drives between jobs. And they are reliable. They have some from every year made with no issues. Some well over 250,000.

I have a question, seems like a lot of posts about bad ram truck motors. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has the same motor, yes? There are not nearly as many posts or stories about blown, damaged, crap, whatever issues with the JGC. Why is that?
Isn't it the same motor?

I always forget they offered them in the jeeps, maybe not as many on the road? Different driving habits with the different vehicle types. That’s a great question though, you’ve peaked my interest

I really doubt that they sell many Grand Cherokee diesels.

Well at least it was on the road and not at a dealership waiting on a new motor! LOL!

How is the reability on Ram with the 3.0 V6 Turbo Ecodiesel 2014 too 2016?

Are they reliable?
STAY AWAY!!! they have a critical design flaw that causes the engine to blow. The cam gear slips, the timing goes off and the valves collide with the pistons. Results, $13,219.40 dollar bill to replace the engine.

Just traded my 2017 Eco Laramie for 2019 Laramie 5.7 Hemi. I owed Eco Diesel for 1 year and 3 months. Put 28000 miles on it. Yes I loved it, specially the gas millage. During that time I took it for warranty repairs 4 time each time dealer kept it for 7-10 days. Replaced EGR gaskets, then whole EGR with Intake Manifold, cat. Converter, exhaust and oxygen sensors and other small items like door seals etc. I had the engine light come in about six - seven times mostly went away the next day so I didn't bather to take it for service. I was afraid that it will cost me to much of wasted time and money to keep fixing it after the warranty expires. I heard that the new '20 Eco Diesel will have a completely redesigned new engine with beefed up components, pistons cylinders. I was gonna wait for the new one but its like becoming a guanine pig testing the new production. Eco's with current model engine have been nothing but problems starting in '14 and ending in 18' (they don't make em anymore). I don't think that there was even one owner that did not have one or two larger problems with it in the first six months owning it. The drawback to my new Hemi is that it drinks a lot of gas vs Eco but hopefully wont keep braking down on me.

Never had an issue, just a DPF sensor at 38k miles

I wish that was my case because I really liked the Eco Diesel. Maybe my problem is California and its programming for emission control that is messing with vehicle performance. All the parts braking down on me were related to California emission control. May be different then in Texas?

I've only had mine for 6 months and 10k miles so I can't speak to reliability. But they come with a 5 yr/100k mile powertrain warranty so that's all I need.

The production number of Jeep and 1500 14-16 is disclosed by the AEM recall to be approximately 100,000. A wild guestimate of units produced per month would be around 2,800, below is a FCA doucument about failures. Mine has been good so far but if I had read this before purchase I would have passed on the Eco-D. Of note, AEM reflash cause a serious cold engine lack of power, some call it throttle lag, also a significant drop in milage in my personal truck.

Bought my 2016 used with 31K miles. I purchased a service contract because the history was sketchy and it was worth it. Vehicle had an egr cooler leak from day one, warranty on emissions at that time was 24 months/24K miles but with the service contract it only cost me the $100 deductible. I now have 95000 miles on it and it has been trouble free. The key to diesel longevity is you can't drive it like a gas engine. You need to let it warm up a bit before you put your foot into the throttle and you need to let it idle for a few minutes when you come off the highway. As for the upcharge for the diesel? Buy a low mileage used one with a good maintenance history, treat it gently like your wife or lover and it will provide many miles of trouble free driving. I have made 6 trips from Texas to Minnesota over the past years loaded as you see my attached photo. The worst fuel economy I've gotten on those trips was 14.48 mpg and the best was 18.73 mpg fully loaded. Empty I have averaged on long trips between 25 and 26 mpg consistently with a 3.92 rear end ratio. Diesel fuel usually averages about 30 to 40 cents more per gallon down here in TX but the price difference is probably a wash compared to the economy difference with a Hemi. I am looking forward to buying a used 2020 model with the new updated ecodiesel and anticipate by that time i will probably have about 200K to 250K miles on this one. I believe if I maintain it properly it should still be running strong at that time.

Diesels are an interesting beast, they have their own needs. My first summer job working at an implement dealership, they had two trucks, each driven by the their own driver.
One was getting new injectors and head gasket, from "driven too soft". The second getting new turbo and pistons, because they cracked from being "driven too hard" the owner wanted the drivers to alternate trucks each week to even the issues. (other than issues they had similar mileage and good maintenance history, granted these were 2 ton hauling trucks)
The issue is you can drive a diesel too soft, and you can drive it too hard,
