I'm having to drop a new/remanufactured engine in my 2014 RAM 2500 and I'm wondering if anyone has done any big engine mods out there. If I'm replacing it on my dime, I might as well go ahead and do some good mods. ie headders, cats, tunes, CAI. Or anything else you can come up with. Let me know y'all.

The only one I know who has done any major mods like you are talking about is @theviking.

Guess he decided to go with the replacement over the rebuild.

Donelam, did you find a different replacement other than the one you mentioned a couple months ago?
For a rebuild and machined cylinders is 4k to 5k. I can drop a engine from LKQ in it for 5k to 6k. And it comes with a 2 year warranty. One I looked at is out of a 2016 ram 2500 with 36k miles in it. I had seen somewhere years ago that someone was making high flow CATs and headers. But for the life of me I can't find that post now. I already have the true duals in 3" all the way back from the CATs.

I think this is one of the only 6.4L options for headers...

Sorry, been out of pocket for a while. I've done about every possible NA bolt-on except gears (factory 4.10's). If I would list in order of usefulness, then headers would be first, followed by a custom tune and a torque converter. The American Racing headers are very well constructed and after almost 4 years of daily use I haven't had any trouble. The Magnaflow cat-back is nicely constructed and it gets rid of the stupid tailpipe resonator the factory uses. There is a minor amount of drone under load but it's still not as bad as the Borla system on my old truck.

Canned of tune was a waste of money, but much better with the Hemifever custom tune. Particularly the trans tuning. Of course you'll be stuck running high octane fuel which gets expensive with the mileage these trucks get. But every time I had to reinstall the stock tune (for dealer work, etc) I'm reminded of how much the stock tune is lacking.

You use a 1500 Hemi style converter on these trucks, even with the 66RFE. Stock converter never wanted to hit hard, and even with just a 2600 stall (Edge) converter the difference is night and day. If I wasn't towing much I might have tried the 2800 stall instead.

AFE intake, ported tb and custom "ram air" tube were all very minor changes in comparison. Fastest 0-60 run was 6.08 according to my Diablosport and this was wtih the 35's on. But in fairness, it was a very cold day as well.

Someday I'll probably do gear. Maybe.

Would you possibly be willing to share where you got the info on doing the torque converter swap. Since I have mine pulled, I may look at this.
I have true duals with a 40 series Flowmaster exhaust. 3" I think from the cats back. I need to replace it all. And I'm wanting to start at the headers and go all the way with new. So if you might have some insight on this. Please feel free to share any links or info you may have.

With these headers, and no CATs. Will I have to run a tuner like the one from hemi fever for performance all the time now. I know with a much more flowing exhaust it will want more air and more fuel. Man, I so miss the days of old. When everything was carbureted. Lol. I have a used engine in hand, was $6k and 50k miles. And comes with a 50k mile parts and labor warranty. I have roughly $3k I can spend without going to jail, because I'd have to murder someone to make more money. Lol. And I'm not wanting to spend that much more, wanting to stay under $10k. If I have to do that much, might as well get a new/newer truck. What's my best investment next, headers without CATs??? Here in good ole West By God Virginia, we don't have emissions tests. So I'm not worried about that. d1df994186d1b784e5f898e2cefdbb71.jpg

I talked to Matt at Moe's performance. You can use any converter designed for a 1500 trans, there is no difference. With my Edge 2600 I haven't had any issues while towing or just accelerating normally. For me it was between this and a 2800 stall converter. But even the 2600 is a huge improvement over stock in that the truck just GOES when you nail the gas. In comparison the stock converter felt sloppy and would never really launch hard. Highly recommended!

With a converter, headers and custom tune you will have pretty much every mod (except gears) which was really worth the money IMO. Everything else was more fine-tuning or aesthetic in case of the CAI and cat-back. Even with catted headers and the MF cat back system the truck has a very aggressive sound. Night and day from the stock setup. I get complements all the time.

Good luck with your truck!

I have true duals from the cats back already. How does the aftermarket headers make that much of a difference. And if I go without CATs, do I need to move any sensors or anything.

Yes, they make a big difference. Probably more so than any other single mod. Compare your stock logs to the headers and it's easy to see why. My headers have cats, but you certainly will have to update your tune or you will continually get a cat-efficiency code. Even with cats I'd occasionally have to reset it.

This is just a pic I found online, but gives you a good idea of the difference.

Couple of questions. First, the converter. I always heard that you want a converter that has a stall speed with your normal cruising speed RPMs at 75mph. Is this correct?. And what converter do you recommend. Second, do you have number to talk to someone at Moe's. I'd like to ask them some questions. Like is a ported 85mm Throttle body worth doing, then headers, programmer, and CAI.

I would love to hear what the 6.4L sounds like with those headers.
