True,

Most every trailer tire is not even rated to go that fast but you “can” get tires on your trailer rated for that speed

Good points...people who may be new to towing (or just ignorant) can forget how long it takes to stop at high speeds. We're all guilty of that from time to time, of course, or perhaps we once were, but dang, it should be common sense with a trailer!

I think the other thing is having a truck capable of towing your load...that's why I'm still considering upgrading to an HD. My Reb is good for up to 10K, but if I really want to haul serious loads, I'll have to step up.

Great timely subject for me. I just got back from an elk hunting trip to Colorado. We drove from NJ to Steamboat Springs Co. with a round trip of 4300.

We tent camped and was thinking about buying a smaller camper for our next trip but was curious what speeds were safe, how much it would impact gas mileage and how much additional time it would take to get there and home?

I don’t event do 65 anymore. I keep it in the 55-60 range, and I can usually squeak out 10-11 mpg. Doesn’t seem like much, but the difference between 7-9&10-11 can be huge when towing.

Same here. Anything over 65 for me is a legitimate 2mpg loss. Going from 10mpg to 8mpg is a big loss percentage.

What do you drive on I-15 and I-80 where the speed limits are 75 & 80? I took a trip down to Lake Powell a couple years ago and stayed in that 68-70 mph range on I-15 and seemed to match most other TT & 5th wheel pullers. Remember seeing a big diesel & 5th wheel come rollin' by me at around 80 on I-15 and 40 miles later there he is pulled along the side of the road with a blowout and the rear vinyl on his camper blowing in the wind. Most our state hwy speed limits in Wyoming are 70 anymore so 65 isn't so bad but jump on I-80 and those 80,000 lb rigs are blowing your doors off if you drive 60-65.

All depends on your “ Wants” .. while the purchase and set up and stocking and towing of the trailer is going to add to cost... the creature comforts while traveling and camping are nice. So many factors to confided it’s not even funny. You could also just rent a trailer while hunting.

I roll along at 60 in the right lane, and let the death traps blow by.

That’s it! So many times I’ve heard guys I know talk about “yeh it says it’s only rated for XX lbs but my 1500 can pull it just fine”, and I’m always asking, “but can it stop it!‽?”

My long term average is 9.3 mpg not exceeding 65. I've never tried 60 but will. You are correct in saying 9 to 11 is a huge increase when towing. My current towing mileage is 55K plus. That figures out to 6111 gallons at 65 and 5000 gallons at 60. At 3 bucks a gallon my long term savings would be $3,333.

This is all funny to me. My dad thinks 75 is too fast and 65 is just right. My grandfather thought 65 was too fast and 55 was just right. I am sure my great grand father would have though 55 was too fast and 45 was just right.

I generally tow my RV between 65 and 75 depending on how I feel at the time, what conditions I am towing in, and if I am in a hurry to get to camp before nightfall so I don't have to back in and hook up the trailer in the dark. I buy trailer tires with a higher speed rating than the stock ones it came with that were limited at 65.
