Wow that's strange.

I havent been able to determine if they really use the contents of that file or not, if you have the log file on the USB key Ill take a look (the first few lines of it are what the installer determines the head unit to be)

Mine (which is from a 2017 truck, BTW):

********SOFTWARE UPDATE LOG********
Starting Update
Total units to update: 15
Installing unit 3 SYSTEM CHECK
Got the unit installer for SYSTEM CHECK
System Market matches
System Product matches
system_module_check: Part_number 68312543
System Model Year matches
Installing unit 4 IOC-BOOTLOADER
Got the unit installer for IOC-BOOTLOADER
variant_product=VP4, variant_modelyear=MY18, v850Type=hs, v850Stub=stub

I have a (bad) feeling that they do in fact use that file so if the data is incorrect in the file, no matter what you do you wont be able to install any RA4/VP4 version (not even 17.43.01).

Hopefully Im wrong, but it does make sense since that same file is what shows my head unit at MY18....just like I see in my installer log file.

Maybe try a factory reset (from the engineering menu if it makes any difference)

I just updated from VP3 17.11.07 to VP3 18.45.01 on my RA3 in my 2014 truck without any issues. It took about 25 minutes to do the update.

Just tried to update my buddy's truck. His current version is 16:09:09 so it shows it should update on the list. I used the 18:45.01 update I downloaded from my Vin for my 16 radio and updated my truck with no issues. His radio is a 16 or 17 and it says in incorrect for model year. I'm wondering if the updates that are downloaded for a certain Vin# are year specific or there is some type of glitch with his radio? I'm going to try downloading the one MpGrimm2 has listed and see if it works. This is the first time I've seen this happen with the 18.45.01 update.

That's definitely a 2016 ram Ra4 VP4-NA radio. You could try updating to 17.43.01 or something newer using the fw info thread files and then come back to the 18.45.01

16Ra4 VP4-NA fw post.

Thanks Mike. I figure that's probably the next step. I know for sure the radio came out of a Jeep Grand Cherokee and I was pretty sure it was a 16.

I have a 2017 RAM 1500 Sport (Sublime) with RA4 (8.4" w/NAV) radio. Current software version is 17.11.07. Two or three weeks ago I got the message on the radio screen about the software update. As I was reading the message, I was also in the motion of opening the driver door. I opened the door before I could process the message on the screen, and the message went away. It has never popped up again. I drive the truck almost every day. Today I checked the driveuconnect.com website, entered my VIN, and the site says my software is up to date, no update available. I called uconnect, they said my VIN showed I'm up to date, but couldn't tell me what version number was the newest. They had me do the radio soft reset (hold the volume and browse buttons together). The radio reset, but I still don't get the update message. I called the uconnect software center (877-855-8400) and they couldn't tell me why I didn't get an update message, and there is no way to force the update. They said if I have a problem with NAV after November 3, I should take the truck to my dealer for service. OK, now what do I do? I really don't want to be using the NAV and fall off the edge of the flat earth.

Well, right on schedule, November 3, my clock is several hours wrong and my GPS is completely lost. I never got the OTA update and uconnect website said I was up to date at 17.11.07. So I'm driving around today (November 4), I get to the grocery store, shut off the truck, and I get the OTA software update message. I hit yes do the update now, go into the store for 30 to 40 minutes, come out to the truck, start it up and the screen says "Update failed. Take the truck to the dealer". Now isn't that special. I get the truck home, it gives me another chance to do the OTA update. I tell it "yes, schedule the update for a time 5 minutes from now". Go in the house, come out two hours later, the update isn't done and no error message either. We go out to dinner, get to the restaurant, again it says "OTA update available". I scheduled it for sometime during the night. I'll see what happens tomorrow. I checked uconnect again a few minutes ago. NOW is says there is an update for my truck. I downloaded it just in case I have to do it manually tomorrow. Boy is this frustrating. Good thing I have advanced education and training in computers, networking, and electronics.

How much you want to bet they are handling them on a case by case basis...."VIN *** just called in and said the website doesnt show the update for them, fix it!"

Who knows how long later.....

your VIN now shows the update available.

I didn't complain about mine or called them. I'm thinking its just taking more time than they thought to update the database... perhaps they found that they have to go through it manually.

The update file was sitting on their servers since October 8th. They had plenty of time to do their jobs :)

Report on radio that did not get updated:
I started a different thread for this but I think it might be better here in case anyone is looking for "what if" answers.
UPDATE 11/05/19 5pm ish EST:
As chrisbh17 stated in the next post, it might work then it won’t. This afternoon it worked, didn’t work, worked, then I put in the USB and updated to 18.45.01.
Absolutely no problem letting it update as I drove.
DONE.
Thanks again for posting the software.

Starting to see people on other forums that had that experience...it was off, then it started working. But now its starting to not work again and is not going back into a working state either.

So be prepared to update at some point :)

I just downloaded the file to a thumb drive but when I plug it into my 2014 truck it says files not supported and doesn't bring up the option to update. I'm currently on version 17.11.17. Anybody else have this issue?

Make sure you unzip the contents of the zip file TO the USB drive.

There should be 5 files on the USB drive, not the .zip file that you downloaded. Once extracted you should ONLY see the following on the USB:

Got the update to start but it keeps freezing up in one area. Tells me to unplug the usp and try again. I have done this 3 times and every time it freezes up.20191107_220244.jpg 20191107_220244.jpg

Some people on 17.11.xx have had to update to 17.43.xx before going to 18.45.xx.

Unfortunately you might find that the Sierra wireless card is going bad. There are reports of this happening on this forum. I believe Nav Repair can fi it if it turns out to be the problem.

That is what I was thinking but it did not come up with the normal error for that (Sierra Wireless BOLO failure). Could just be because of this update being different.

@Ram Outdoorsman If you have a different USB drive I would try that. The Sierra Wireless step took the longest during my update, I think either the file is big or the card is slow or both, if you have an extremely slow (or maybe even extremely fast) USB drive, maybe its causing an issue with opening the file(s)?

I have received the OTA msg several times, and each time I tried I would get the "update failed" msg. I received an email with the update info, and to follow the directions. The next day we had a phone msg telling me the same thing about updating. Not a big computer guy, so a friend picked up a USB flash drive and followed the procedures to do it. Plugged it into the truck, and it indicated the USB is not supported ? Called UConnect and they asked what brand flashdrive, told them it was a San Disc, and the person with the very broken English informed us that San Disc will not work ??? So back to the store for another flashdrive, and my friend repeats the procedure on the computer. Attempt # 2, and the same thing, "not supported". Another call to Uconnect, more delays and now told it is the USP flashdrive. When asked what one will work, they said we needed a "Kingston 4gb". Of course no one in our area sells them, so I had to order one, and now it will be a "wait & see" once that arrives. I asked about the OTA that I received and was told they "don't" offer that anymore ??? I have read all the post on this, and it seems like some work, and some don't. I had issues with this radio over a year ago, and things were fixed. I was also told by Ucoonect that GPS and satellite radio has nothing to do with Uconnect, but now they say I can lose my GPS w/o this update ? Sorry for the long post, but this has been, and still is a very frustrating system. But Uconnect did tell me that I had 4 re-calls on the truck and if I was aware of them... I really not fond of dealers and really don't want to go that route and have to pay for something like this. Does anyone know what happens if you just leave it like it is ? I don't care if the GPS is updated or not, don't use any of the fancy features it offers. Also makes me wonder if updates are more of a hassle if your NOT a Uconnect subscriber ? I sure miss the old "non tech" days.

Thanks.

Jim
