No, I said that as a compromise because you didn't want to run 20 weight. We seam to be choosing our oil based on what we hear, me included, and some oils make the hemi sound better. If I had a loud knock at start up I would at least try 0w20 first, assuming the cause of thickness, some knocks need moly to sound better. Because these two knocks showed up when it got cold, this is the strategy we are considering, and it does make sense. Because as hemi users and owners oil strategies are all we really got for these ******** FCA tolerances. You could even attempt to fix this mechanically and have the same issue when you are done, it's just our reality. So I would try and solve it with lubrication and give it the best chance first, and if cold is the issue then 0w20 is the best chance at being the thinnest at startup and have same operating visc as 5w20. Now, when I say thinner at start up mind you we are talking about potential viscosities in the 100's if not 1,000's, so it's not thin by any means, just made for cold temps.

Additionally, we have had knocks, like mine severe, but 5w20 ended the knocking, and 5w30 also has had no knocking. But some trucks 5w20 didn't stop knocking, it took 5w30. Here's the thing, you don't know where your truck falls unless you try 0w20. If 0w20 keeps cold knock away, and also keeps hemi tick away as in warm idle knock, then clearly that would be the way to go imo. Mind you if our strategy is not working, we have to adjust. I'm spoiled it was 80f two days ago and 77f yesterday. So I don't know how my truck would be reacting in the cold, just that any oil is thicker in the cold.

excellent info as always. i really hate to waste the oil i have in it. its not even a 3rd of the way through its oci. ill probably order 4 qts from nick and see how that does. ill drain and fill until its good.

on the flip side, think it has anything to do with the filter? not sure how, or if possible, temp could affect the filter....or could it?

yes and very good point, this is what I'd try first as you will be changing with oil change anyway. Now, you will have some oil left in there if you change it anyway, but I wouldn't worry too much about that, good strategy for sure. If you are on RP filter, maybe see if you can find srt filter or fram ultra. It might work, I really believe that. I had my truck knock on one filter but not another on a fresh oil change, you never know. til you try.

Help! I switched over to Red Line 5w30 in my 2017 Ram 1500 Hemi with a royal purple filter about 5k miles ago. Truck has 27k miles on it. Since it is starting to get cold here the last few weeks I have been getting a horrible load knock upon cold start up and it quiets down after about 3 seconds but you can still hear it a little bit until the engine is fully warm.

Do you think this can be from the oil? I never had this issue when I was running Mobile 1. Do you think I should go to 5w20 because of the cold weather? The knock has been bad at about 20 degrees.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Funny thing is i had a tap not right a start up but when idle came down a bit it always went away at full warm up. I switched to redline from mobil1 to see if it would make a difference. Seemed like it was just as bad or louder. So i was going to get a video of it to post. Now it won't tap its been 5 days in cold weather and sounds fine. Idk maybe i scared it away. If it was the redline that made it go away it took about 1000 miles. I'll keep listening but for now its quiet. Dam hemi. Its a 6.4 by the way. 49000 miles

i was about to post my cold start this am. i posted about this exact issue in the syn oil thread. last winter i switched over to redline 5w30 and had no issues, down to 15 below. now this winter im having loud start up chatter. never this loud before. i changed the oil 1000 or so miles ago with a good uoa. same redline 5w30 and rp 20820 as before. i was thinking cold combined with redlines plateability. not sure what i want to do. dont really want to go to all 5w20. maybe half and half. mine is a 2014 with 78k miles.

start up this morning 21 degrees out

Hi all,

Please let us know via private message if you decide to address this with your dealers. We would be more than happy to have your concerns formally documented, as well as provide you with an additional layer of support while working with your dealers.

Wow! I didn't realize the 5.7 took 7 quarts like the 6.4. I thought you guys were 6 quarts. If your lucky, you learn something new every day.

Yeah, just as of expensive oil change as the 6.4 minus the extra torque!

@Burla do you feel Mobil 1 0w20 is a good oil? I can get this oil at a good price at my Costco and was thinking of trying it this weekend. I will drain out the redline 5w30....just would hate to go back to Mobil 1 after seeing the benefits of redline. I just need to fix this start up issue. Is Mobil 1 a decent oil compared to Redline?

I have used m1 in everything I've ever had until this tapping 6.4. I used it in my 5.7 hemi for 115k no problems. I have to say just about under 1000 miles my 6.4 has not ticked tapped or anything on redline 0w40 and a rp filter. It did take awhile of driving to stop. Now its only been 5/6 days of no tap but hey its never done that before.

M1 0 winter rated oils are some of the highest quality oils you can get imo. Is it regular m1 or esp or some other lineup? Either way, you look at the specs, the winter rated oils that carry the mercedes and porsche specs need higher quality base oils to meet those specs. Many 0w20's don't have those specs, because they don't use the base oils necessary to have those low temperature performance added to stay in grade capabilities.

The extended performance, afaik, is quite high in pao.

I chose m1 0-20 ep for my wife's Lexus instead of the Toyota 0-20. 10k mile oci per factory specs.

M1 0 winter rated oils are incredible oil for cold performance and general every day use. Now, how that relates to problems we see in hemi's, dunno. Regardless what happens in individual hemi's, it would be hard pressed to find better 0 winter rated oils, something I feel m1 excels at just from what I've read on it.

What if one has a tick that last 2 or 3 seconds on 1st start? That something else?
I had it with the oil change from the dealer and now it happened with redline 5w30/rp filter.
I only have 9500 miles on a 2016. Its cold now but i did have this in the warm months with the dealer oil every so often. Weird as it may go a while with out doing it.

And you need an extra elbow on your right arm to reach the damn filter. Also need some cleanup rags.
So glad I moved up to a 2500 w/6.4. I didn't want to do one more oil change on my 1500 5.7

you need to give redline some time. when i switched over my truck had a light tick. redline pretty much killed that right away. but after around 1400 miles on Redline the motor then really quieted down. night and day difference. so ride it out. we want miracles right away. give it time. how cold of temps are you seeing?

20s and 30s. Sometimes its there on start up sometimes its not and it disappears quick so maybe exhaust valve tap?

My 11 experienced the cold start tick one oil change. Turned out it went away went I changed the filter. This was a RP filter the 20-820 big filter. Spun on an SRT Mopar filter and no more tick.

Think it might have been a bad filter. Since then have regularly used either an SRT filter or the RP 20-820 and no tick on cold start.

I'm at 135k miles and have been using redline 5w30 for 35k miles (with 8k OCI) and my only issue has been the filter.

Lately my change oil indicator has been coming on at about 4 to 5 k. I just change the filter reset the indicator and continue driving.

My truck is very picky for some reason. It performs flawlessly but it's a high maintenance ***** and wants what it wants.

I would look at the filter because it has a check valve on it sometimes they fail under cold conditions. I know because I had that happen with a Fram filter. Also a lot of these filters are made by one company and lets say your brand just slaps their sticker on it. Now you think wow its got to be good but all made by one company for them

FWIW my truck seems to like the SRT filter better than the RP as well. And that was after trying both size RP filters and my 2nd 20-820.

I only wish the SRT filter was black so it wasnt so obvious to prying eyes ;)

It's not the oil you're using, it's the QC of the Hemi engine. Here's mine with 6K mile after the dealer did an oil change.
