Correct, if the code is Pending it means the PCM has found a fault on a multiple event fault code. For example if a code for too rich takes 3 times for it to set the check engine light but the PCM has only found 1 rich condition, it will set a pending code. That will disable MDS and the Eco light.

Had this happen a couple years ago with an Evap code. All of a sudden MDS stopped working and the Eco light stopped illuminating. Got home and pulled the codes to find a pending P0441.

Also before you start it up on a cold start, check in the uconnect settings under display and make sure "fuel saver in cluster" is checked.

Thanks, I will check and see if there are any codes. Also, I have looked at the display settings and I do not have the "fuel saver in cluster" option.

No problem! Let us know if you find anything.

Yeah that option only appears on my truck at least, on cold starts before I start the truck. No idea why....

Also, this may/not have anyrhing to do with it but the software version I am running is 15.26.1. I went on the uconnect site and downloaded latest and it' version 18.45.1. Seems like the software I am running is very old (If you do by version numbers alone). I have been trying but for some reason the truck is not recogizing the thumbdrive. Still working on that too.

I'll post what I find out thanks.

curious, where is the eco light you are talking about? am guessing my 2016 has the mds.

On the premium cluster it should be a little Green “Eco” that lights up when you’re driving economically. It doesn’t necessarily mean that MDS is on tho.

On the standard cluster I’m not sure where it is...

How did you turn the MDS off completely? How much better MPG did you get with it turned on?

I had a local tuner use his HPTuner to turn off MDS in the PCM. The better and complete way is to also replace the lifters (and the cam if you’ve gone that far) as well as in the PCM. I was getting closer to 16 mpg with 91+ octane gas on the highway. The noise that came out of my exhaust when it was on was horrible and trying to hit the gas and pass someone took forever. It drove me nuts!!

I could be wrong here but I don't think it's a question whether you have mds or not, if it's a 4th gen hemi, its got mds. I could be wrong but all 3 of my 4th gens have had it and I never saw one that wasn't listed that way on a build sheet. If it's disabled or not is another question though.

In the radio settings screen it will be called “Fuel Saver”. That turns on/off the eco light. Some radio software versions had the option omitted. There was an update to fix that awhile ago. Check for any radio updates.

As well eco doesn’t always mean MDS is activated. All it means is you’re driving in a eco manner. Usually MDS will be activated but not always.

finally found how to enable it. had to go thru that U connect screen. is hard to imagine how many readings can be obtained in this instrument panel.

I always thought they should have an option to disable MDS from within the settings menu. It’s like that stupid engine shut down when stopping that Ford has on most of it’s new vehicles. Yes you can turn it off via the button on the dash but you have to do it every time you get in the vehicle. For us, that was a deal breaker in considering a Ford truck.

I'm guessing the previous owner used a tuner on it and left the custom tune on it when it was sold/traded.

The eight digit in a Ram VIN is for horsepower. "T" is for the 5.7 Hemi on 1500s. "G" is currently the PentaStar with eTorque and that would've been a different letter on the 4th gens.

I'm not seeing a reference to a "D" in the eight position. But I am quite certain that all 4th gen 1500s with 5.7s had MDS feature.

Are you sure you have a 5.7 Hemi? Ram 1500s had the 4.7 V8 as an option in 2013 and that would mean a different eight digit code. The 4.7 did not have MDS.

Best regards,
Dusty

Why would you turn it off
It's junk. Just another emissions gimmick where things go horribly wrong. My opinion is if you want a 4 cylinder you buy one don't try to make a V8 one. I've had my mds disabled for a year and I noticed zero difference in fuel economy whatsoever. I recently had an mds lifter eat the cam i did non mds lifters and performance cam. Now I shouldn't have any problems.

Not to mention, if you have a non stock exhaust it sounds like your truck is having some long grumpily farts and you feel it kicking in and out. I got into the habit a long time ago of putting it into manual 7 or 8 each time I put it in drive.

Yeah I just did muffler swaps with cherry bomb extremes which are tiny compared to the rv sized muffler that comes stock. Drove me crazy when I'd forget to take it out of MDS and it would go into it, sounded awful and hated the throttle lag that came with it. Wasn't as bad stock, but still didn't like the idea of it then either.
