In 1986, while stationed in Cuba, we had a young man on the Windward side of the base that was home sick and wanted out of his orders there. He knew of some discrepancies with ammo and equipment so he wrote a letter to his congressman in which he, in exchange for getting him off the base, would identify the parties involved.

Needless to say, it got back to the base and "The Parties" involved. I had never heard the term "Code Red". However, Marines police there own.

Unlike the movie, in real life, he didn't die. And now you know the REAL story behind the movie, "A FEW GOOD MEN."

(Seven Marines were charged and six were convicted. One Marine, Cox, fought the charges and finished his tour in the Marines. Sadly he was murdered, execution style, in the woods beside his home. They never found his killer.)

Figured the movie was based on something. I did Cuban Boatlift there in 1995. We were billeted in the Hurricane Shelters. Used to go to Gym there by McDonalds. I did my PT run from shelters up hill all the way towards Camp X-ray, around, then up DAT Monster Tarawa Hill Rd, then down, around and back to shelters. YUP, those Marines stuck together. When we first got there, they had Superbowl on at Bar near shelters. I and about 30 other soldiers were in there to watch game. Bunch of "Marines" came in, and ordered "my" soldiers out of Bar. Well, I had to get up and get involved. Played the rank game. Since I was an E6, put a cease to activities,. A Gunny came in and yelled , WTF is going on? I ID myself, and we had a brief conference. Suffice it to say, those Marines were real pleasant rest of evening, just a saying. Discipline in the CORP U could neva deny. Gunny had those guys locked up, it was impressive for sure...

Good morning Jay !

So, anyone have any good funny stories that occured while serving ?
When I was an e4 at ft Carson, there was an abandoned 88 Cherokee in front of my post housing. Neighbors said it had been there for 2 years and thought it was the prior families. So I went looking through it and found that it used to belong to some soldier from the csh unit on base and was bought from a local dealer.

Well, the master cylinder in the wifes car went out, so instead of spending 88 bucks for that, I spent 13 for a new ignition, a free Optima battery from the motor pool and some 15/40, the plates off the wires buick and I was driving it on post to get to work. Figured if I didnt get pulled over I was good.

Got popped coming down the road on base doing 42 in a 35 apparently and the mp couldnt figure out why the jeep didnt look like a Buick lesabre. Told my story to 4 mp's because they just couldn't believe that over dispatch.

I ended up getting 4 citations. Speeding, driving without registration, driving without ins, and fictitious plates. Had to go to court. Company wanted to give me an article 15.

Court had me pay a 35 dollar fine for speeding and dropped everything else. The jag officer laughed his ass off when I told him why I did what I did.

Company was pissed they couldn't demote me cause I already had the punishment of a speeding ticket lol.

Jay,
You touched on something a page or two back. I usually feel more than just a little uncomfortable when thanked for my service. I did what I did for me. No regrets and it was a hoot, but in the end, I never heard a shot fired in anger and while I had more than a few occasions I wasn't 100% sure the day was going to end well, I would do it again in a heartbeat. But there are others, far too many others, that deserve to be thanked for they are the ones who really sacrificed. To this day I can remember names, see faces and hear voices of those who really deserve the thanks I am getting. In the end, I softly reply a thank you for their remembering servicemen and women and in my head I tell myself I am just accepting it for them.

much longer than I intended but I think it touched a nerve in me. in a good way.

You said beautifully my feelings also. I joined the USAF in 1976. I was an aircraft control and warning radar tech (39352!). It was a great start in my tech career- stationed in Charleston AFS Maine and SEMBACH Germany. In those days no women in combat (thank God) so no possibility of that.
Thanks for putting my feelings into words for me.
I know many veterans went through hell for us and i am so thankful for them.

So back on post #28 I said I would pick up where I left off in this thread. (Jay, if this is not what you set up this thread for, let me know)
So in country. Driving a 10T Army issue (Ford) tractor trailer from Long Binh to places like Tay Ninh, Hobo jungle, Ben Hoa. Hauled mostly chopper parts and C Rats. Not a bad gig. Out on the road or convoy about 7:00 or 8:00. Back at base early afternoon. Most meals in the mess hall. Shower, bear, smokes, jokes and poker every night.
Then came Tet. We were living in *****'s. Wood floor, frame with tent cover. Two trenches along side the *****. One for incoming, one for ****. Charlie hit the ammo dump around 2 in the morning. After the first 1 or 2 rounds we figured out,,, incoming, not out going. Being smart common sense guys we grabbed our helmets, rifles and dove into the trench. Lets just say that trench was warm. As people were running for cover or to their assigned area the rockets and mortars were coming in fast and hard. So we had visitors jumping into the trench too. I remember one Sargent saying WTF. You idiots must be Army draftee's. Wilson replied, "I am sure you are not" as the Sargent tried to climb out of that slippery trench. Incoming, outgoing, charlie breaching the wire. Didn't matter. We were hell bent on making it to the showers before they got blown up. Ever showered holding a m-14 in one hand.

NOPE, neva showered holding my rifle, but then I neva was in combat, being a VET of the Post Vietnam Peacetime Gig. But I took my M-16 into the shower many a time to rinse out the solvent after cleaning, does that count??? Only comparison I could think of, since I was part of that Peacetime years (not counting Gitmo, etc or Desert Storm/Shield), when I was assigned to a Community Unit in Germany and could get no where near Iran/Iraq whicheva.

I want to add a story about wearing "veteran's gear". My father-in-law was a 3 war combat vet. He was a Marine in WWII in the Pacific, got out went to college, saw the light (haha!) and joined Army ROTC. He went to Korea and then Vietnam. He was a Lieutenant Colonel Infantry when he came back from 'Nam and they said they would make him a full Colonel if he would go back for another tour. He said he'd had enough.

Anyway... he was in his 80's and wearing a ballcap with WWII/Korea/Vietnam veteran on it as he and his wife were boarding an airplane. There were a couple of active duty soldiers in uniform ahead of them in line. The gate agent thanked the active duty guys for their service and asked if they wanted to sit in First Class. They thanked her and said "No, but we sure would like them to sit there", pointing to my FIL and MIL. And they did.

I was always thankful to the airlines - Northwest, before they merged with Delta - and the active soldiers that gave up a nice seat.

Ace, what a great share. As a 73 year old Veteran of Vietnam. I have noticed a very different attitude/appreciation from the public and business's today compared to 1968. Enjoy great discounts and private parking at some business. Harbor Freight now offers 10% for over 65 and 10% for Veteran/Military. They claim that their business with that group of customers has increased by 28%. Bang for buck. Fitz

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!!!!!! I hope you had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year. I was happy to hear that POTUS recently signed a law giving all military service men and women a 3% raise. That sure would have helped my $85 a month when I went in. Maybe the low pay was offset by the excellent working and living conditions and chow we got in Marine boot camp---LOL. Once again Thank You for all you do and have done-I'm truly proud to be in the 1%.

Checking in with y'all. I hope the New Year is going well so far--a little early to screw things up yet LOL. Really tired of all the crap going on in DC, I've almost quit watching the news or reading the paper. You can't believe any of the crap some of the news people say. Sorry-can't get too political due to the forum rules but damn IMHO our country is starting to go to hell in a handbag. I'll get off my soapbox now--have a great day everyone.

YUP, I'll take my 10% every time, I earned it, Peacetime 20 years or not,., but some PPL now not think that. I remember after Desert Storm drew down, there were the PPL that went and got awards up the Kazoo and advanced, and the PPL like me in the rear guard, and we got not a dang thing, But honestly, not bitter, I WAS PROUD to serve wherever my Country needed me, and that was in a Community Unit (BSB) in Germany taking care of the community and all the family members of those deployed.
