Oil Temperature ?

I have a 2018 Tradesman with the CTD with the EVIC gauges. While driving the other day I noticed the oil temperature varying a good bit. It would go up to 195 and then drop to 177 and slowly go back up and drop again. Water temperature would rise to 192 then drop back to 188. I understand the water temperature varying as it was cool outside but I haven't seen the oil temperature varying this much this fast. Does it have a separate sensor for temperature and pressure? The oil pressure never varied except with rpm. I read in a search that oil temperature was just an algorithm produced by one of the many computers onboard. Is this true? I'm going to try it on a warmer day and see what it does but I haven't noticed this before. I appreciate any information. I don't really want to have to take it to the dealer. It still has less than 4K miles on it.

Thanks for the reply and that may be my only resolution for this. Just trying to figure out if this is a mechanical or electrical issue. I know on the bigger Cummins engines that the oil cooler is part of the engine and not a separate radiator mounted cooler. I’m not familiar enough with the ISB to know how everything works on them. The coolant temperature varying a few degrees is normal but I would think the oil temperature wouldn’t go up and down as fast as it is. Just trying to get some information on how it works. Thanks again.

I don't remember who, but it was mentioned that the Oil temp is not actually measured and is somewhat of an estimate made by the computer. I could be wrong, but that's what I remember reading.

I read something along those lines also. The truck is running great and the oil pressure is steady. Less than a thousand miles since I changed the oil and filter. Thanks for the reply.

The oil pressure and oil temp are calculated values on the Cummins equipped 4th gen rams

I thought I had seen that somewhere. Thanks. I’m going to drive it some more this week and see what happens. I’ve got a trip next week with my TT, about 200 miles each way and there’s a dealer within a half a mile of where I’ll be camping if the problem persist. Thanks again.

I took it to the dealer, they checked it and couldn’t find anything wrong. They did find the fan clutch going out and replaced it. When this pandemic is over and I can start traveling, may the good lord have mercy on it.
