8 speed transmission problems, or just how it is?

Curious question...

Why would a person choose the V6 over the V8?

Fuel economy isn't enough difference to really make a difference... and I can't think of any other reason that makes sense to me.

Power.... today's V6's make as much or more power than all but a few big block V8's from the 70's and 80's.

Today's small block V8's make as much or more power than all but a select few big blocks from the muscle car era (1960's).

Lastly.... today's big block V8's make as much or more power than the engines from Nascars heyday (1980's).

All that is to say.... today.... power isn't the limiting factor for everyday truck users...it is most often the transmission that is the limiting factor.

My 2 cents,
Given a choice of anything from 4 to 16 cylinders.... I'll take the V8 every time in a truck, V6's have their place in cars and lighter vehicles.

Only one reason why I'm choosing the V6 over the V8. Lifter and cam problems that are prevalent in the Hemi. Otherwise, I'd love to have the Hemi. I also will not be doing any towing with this truck at all. The V8 would be complete overkill for me.

Good to know and hear about. You can change the fluid on these? I thought it was supposed to be a lifetime fluid, thus no real way to drain and replace?

Matt Fikac/Moes is putting almost 1100 rwhp through an 8HP70,and he does daily drive it fairly often.

The V-6 trucks use the smaller 8HP45 8 speed, only the 5.7 trucks get the heavier duty 8HP70 transmission

Understood.

2016 and newer trucks don't seem to be having that problem....I heard they started using updated and better treated roller bearings in 2016.

I had heard that too, and it made me tempted again, but then I read, and I think it was on this forum, about a person with a 2018 or 2019 that had the problem at about 30K or 40K ish miles. Could have been a fluke, and of course that got covered under warranty, but it still gives me cold feet.

I don't suppose you know if its just the 16 MY or thats the actual year they started using them, mine was built somewhere in 2015 i believe.

Hellcats, Demon get 8HP90 8 spd.

Track Hawks get the 8HP95 and as far as I've heard the newer 5th Gens are getting the upgraded 8HP75,but whether that's just the e-torque trucks i'm not sure.TCS offers a kit to upgrade the 8HP70 to the 8HP75 which increases it's holding capacity a fair bit.

Haas the last numbers in the trannies designation refer to it's torque rating in Newton Meters. The little tranny is rated to 450 Newton/Meters, the 8HP70 is rated to 700 Newton /Meters and the 8HP90 is rated to 900 Newton /Meters.700 Newton/Meters is basically a 516 lb-ft of torque rating, and that's a continuous rating

I knew of the three main ones, did not know the 95 and 75 though.

I haven't been able to nail that down exactly.... but I "think" it applies to model year 16 and newer.

My brother in law has a 2016 1500 that he bought used with 42k miles on it.... nice truck, exactly like my 18... all the same options...it seems to be holding up so far.

That's good to hear. How is that V6 power wise with the 3:21 gearing? I'm on the hunt for a V6 ram, but the 3:55 gearing seems to be harder to find.

I haven't towed with it but I carry loads in the bed and I think it's great. In fact 3rd gear on this 8 speed is lower than first gear was in my old F-150 with a 3:55 rear end. I don't drive with a heavy foot, but when I do need to punch it this truck takes off! Unless you're going to tow a lot I think the 3:21 is a great choice with the 8-speed. I get 19-20 mpg combined, and 23 to 24 freeway only.

Mine is a Tradesman with the black bumpers, but upgraded interior. When I bought it the ones that came with the chrome package and sliding rear window, which I didn't want, had the 3:55 gearing.

To be honest, if my truck happened to have a v-6 when i went to buy, i wouldn't have cared one bit. I had a RC ford f150 before it with 3.7 v-6 Loved it, pretty peppy too.

Impressive, i was just talking to a buddy of mine, (mechanic) whether i should change or never change, this seems to answer that question. I was just telling him, i haven't ever heard of any automatic going over say 310,000 under no conditions, ( not that there aren't any of course).

Is that person on here?

He sometimes pops in here, it's VernDiesel
He delivers AirStreams TT for factory with his '14 EcoDiesel. He had a head gasket lift on his first motor at 371K miles, installed a new motor and I know he's went over the 600K mark I think a good month ago.
He found out that the 1500 EVICs will stop at that mileage, it since has been replaced.

Now is the 8sp in the Eco the 8HP70? Although the torque ratings are different otherwise probably very similar trannys?

The EcoDs get the 8HP70 also, and it's a V-6. It puts out slightly more torque than the Hemi at half the rpms.

I had a 2000 F150 with the V6, drove it over 300,000 miles with no engine failures at all, except I was getting a valve stem leak toward the end causing a plug to foul. That was a great little engine in my opinion, but I'm even more impressed with this Pentastar so far.
