WY.Ram lol. I thought about asking to trade it in see if they ding me on engine noise. I’ll let it get worse and try again it was really bad before any dealer would say it was bad. This dealer is the first to acknowledge a problem. But since they have now tried to fix and made it better but not 100% they are done. The service advisor who helped initially also left which was weird. Maybe I should pull the valve covers off and check valve lash and springs myself. Was wondering if a rocker arm was loosening up or the pushrod got beat from it tapping before. Not sure who could analyze it besides a ram dealer.

Lifter tick for a few seconds at startup is not a new thing, not even a hemi thing.
It started decades ago on most all hydraulic lifter engines and isn't an issue or unusual in a pushrod motor.
It actually was worse from cars motors back in the heyday of pushrod motors and no one ever thought twice about it.

True, soem even had to be re-tighten , priodically.
However, lifter failure was pretty rare and this Hemi Lifter tick is a known issue . There are lifters, that fit, exactly, but are slightly mor emoney adn not used. The lifters that are used, fail , due to low oil pressure, on start up, and oil bleed down, after engine stop and sits.

Bototm line, **** part, everyone knows it and FCA keeps pushing the OEM Part. Why, who the hell knows.
Not unlike that 3rd Braqke LIght Gasket that leaks and gets fixed with the same damn gasket when the fix is just a few bucks and common sense.

I totally agree with your list of possibilites and are definitely worth checkn out but if you lay a wrench on that Valve train that is exactly what I was referring to as a waranty escape route.

I had delayed engagement in my trans, getting worse and worse. Took it in they said they could duplicate the prob, so I changed the fluid and filters, this is at like 43k miles. I used redline full synthetic, super careful, and the trans seemed to improve but the problem was intermittent, a couple months later, kachunk, never threw a code through all of it. And suddenly I need a new trans and they blamed me for the failure because I changed the fluid.

I didn't realize the significances of delayed engagement or my attorney would have been the next voice they heard instead of me paying $5500 for new trans.

It was reported, documented, given to them for analysis and repair, they still had the audacity to blame me, and I let em get away with it. Power train warranty and lifetime warranty, trans is days away from failure and I touched it and was straight up about it, soooo they let me buy the new one.

I don't promote not being straight, but if I had to do it again, i would not confess that I tried to do something when they wouldn't.

Anyway, just so you know, Be careful who you tell what you been touch n, but no matter if it's me I'm probably gonna touch it any way. The longer it goes thrashing about with something loose, the higher number of parts will be affected. If they'd have fixed your lifters immediately, you would not have a possible bent rods or worn cam lobe but they don't be seem to be focused on our long term loyalty. Fkrs!

Good luck with it all

Gawddam common sense brother, seems like FCA management doesn't have a lick of it.

And I still love my truck. I'd be such a cheap **** for them. Christ, throw me a gasket and full set of lifters that work, and they'd own me for life. Lol

Changing fluid, if done correctly, never had anything to do with trans failure. You must be wealthy to have $5500.00 to plop down on a trans! ;) All you and your attorney needed was a professional trans tech to testify to that fact. Delayed engagement is a huge red flag, btw.

I have a 2016 6.4 2500 with 46,000 miles. I’ve always heard a ticking sound for about 30 seconds to 1 minute on a cold start and then it goes away. (Bought the truck new). Decided to take it to the dealer yesterday, in Michigan, to get it checked. Dealer says they are going to replace 4 lifters. They said the cam was fine. Makes me wonder if this will be happening again in the not so distant future. Warranty ends at 60k.

It’s weird how one guy gets 430K miles on his 6.4 hotshotting and other people experience lifter failures under 50 K miles ? Luck of the draw I guess?

Yea. Strange. I’ve been really good to this truck. Barely tow with it.

I'm pretty sure he had a camshaft/lifter failure at some point and had them changed out.

When I bought mine in January 2016 couldn’t find anything bad about the 6.4l. I don’t abuse mine at all. Most of the time the most I tow is 3500lbs my car hauled and sxs. Once a year I tow a 10000lbs camper witch is well below my tow limits. So I’m also surprised my lifter gave up at 49,000 miles. Things sounds a lot better but started ticking again 250 miles later but dealers says it’s normal now

The lifter issue has nothing to do with type of use or abuse...its faulty parts.

so there should be absolutely no ticking at all to be included in the lucky ones group? Or is it normal to tick for a couple if seconds at start?

To be able to cover any group with an all encompassing description is really difficult, Especially when everyone is not exposed to the 'tick' that is being questioned. Hell I struggle with mine sometimes and I'm right there. I have heard mine chatter 1 sec, 2 sec, and sometimes maybe longer, rarely, but it has. I've even heard it be almost quiet, rarely, but it has.

Mine has even chattered at the end of the drive. I am in the habit of Everytime I start it and just before I turn it off I listen to every sound I can discern. The garage enclosure helps amplify any abnormalities, I'll even give it a bit of a throttle pump (2500 rpm or less, usually less) on occasion if I do hear any chatter, see if the frequency changes w rpm type of thing.

It's never silent besides combustion, but there's a lot moving under there, but I do like it when I hear exhaust only but I wouldn't say silence is mandatory or emminent lifter failure is upon you.

Much depends on the tick, I can get lifter chatter depending on the condition of my oil. Mine will chatter on half a quart low, and it'll chatter on too long an oci.

So if I hear any business at all I check the blood level, see where oil monitor puts the life and make adjustments from there.

Sometimes I think I hear lifter noise but it's too quiet, I believe it to be the injectors I'm zoned in on.

Exhaust leak is a very common and tricky tick, for me any ways. Sounds a lot like metal on metal. If your tick is serious enough it's very possible the manifold bolts are broke, one or two, causing a leak (very common, more so then lifter failure I think). Look for the black exhaust 'scar' where an an exhaust leak could occur on the heads and exhaust manifold. And even down the entire length of your exhaust.

Utilize the search tool and I know there are at least two posts where the member uploaded a sound clip of lifter failure. It'll put your mind at ease because a cam lobe wipe and locked up roller lifter are nasty sounding.

I've also read from the onset of the lifter / cam failure the tick progressed very rapidly. But if you have noise, ticks, chatter, etc don't ignore it, keep being vigilante and chase that **** down doing what needs to be done to eliminate or at least identify, if possible.

Mine has 85k on the clock, drove her like I love her (sometimes as hard as I could, sometimes as gentle as..well nah) and I think she's any easy 250k mi unit. With that being said, I am not gonna count on hope and prayer, my next move is to replace my cam and lifters. That being solely driven by performance gains but justified to my wife as preventative maintenance.

Thanks. so far from what I've researched, it seems like, as long as the needle bearings inside the rollers stay super clean and plenty lubricated, the engine should stay healthy.

My plan is to change oil at shorter intervals and maybe use zinc additive? I always use Mobil1 0W-40.

But if one has a faulty lifter from the factory to begin with, changing oil every week can't even stop the emminent demise of the engine, right?

1) I believe diligent maintenance can definitely extend the life of these crappy valve lifters, for how long is hard to say but I'm willing to try if for no other reason other than to be able to make them last until I can get them removed, saving the rest of the engine the trauma of being scarred by the shrapnel of a shredded cam lobe. If a lifter fails first, hopefully I am not in some rare situation that I cant turn the engine off immediately. I feel fortunate to have made 85k mi, and it sounds great and runs even better but I don't trust the lifters not to fail. And Such a pain in the ass to change or I'd have done it already.

2) I don't know about the zinc additive, so I cant comment. I do read the synthetic oil thread on occasion. Really the most I can offer here is that I run redline 5w40, send my oil sample to Blackstone Labs and follow their recommendation for OCI. I didn't much care for the way mine was sounding with Mobil1 at 40k mi so I changed and am much happier with the last 45k mi. But I would also be willing to try PUP, and make sure your oil filter is a top selection. Royal Purple, Wix, Fram Ultra (I think thats the right name). The filter is a critical component as is the Blackstone Labs. Run 5000 miles and send them a sample, enlightening.

3) Can't stop it but possibly prolong it. I really thought mine was wiping a cam lobe at 40k mi. She was noisy and didnt run consistently well. Since Ive switched oil type I have not had the noise that kept me thinking bad things, or the other inconsistencies. Did I prolong the life of the valve train by changing to a million dollar oil and changing it diligently at 5000 or less. I think so, but **** I don't know for sure. So Im just gonna get them damn mds lifters outta my truck because I plan on keeping this truck for hot minute at least until the dino fuel is gone any way. lol

One thing you could do is record a sound clip of your cold start and post it in a new thread, the community would be all over the feedback. I don't think I really said anything here that could be construde as helpful, it such a f mystery about how long the modern hemi valve train is going to run and there's few solid answers. But the ones that made it the longest have one common factor and that is regular maintanence. not a guarantee for high milage but without regular maintenance a much higher probability for a short life.

My truck's got only 10k mi so far even though its a 2015 6.4L. I'm just very paranoid reading things on the internet. Right now she's not ticking or anything and I'd like to keep it that way as long as possible. Your comment totally helps - helps me head in the right direction.

One thing about zinc though, I may be talking stupid but my logic is that if high zinc oil keeps factory non-roller flat lifters working normally for many many years, it should also keep a seized up roller lifter from chewing into the cam lobe, right? A seized up roller lifter is basically a flat lifter, No?
