So I installed deezee tailgate assist today, and I followed the instructions, the bigger end of shock is on the truck bed side and the smaller end is attached to the tailgate. The problem I have is if I open the tailgate, the first 1/3 to 1/2 travel of the tailgate is still pretty quick, it is not dampered until the tailgate is opened at 45 degrees.. is this normal or I have a bad shock? Bought it from Amazon if that matters..

Thanks!

Several years ago I installed one on my son’s 2014 Ram 1500 Outdoorsman and it operates smoothly and slowly for the entire travel opening of the tailgate.

I was with him today and opened the tailgate, and it still works flawlessly.

I would return the item for a replacement, or contact DeeZee.

Strange, mine does the same thing. It free falls for the first 1/3, but then grabs the rest of the way down. I don't really see an issue with that, as it doesn't allow my tailgate to slam. Oh well, not worth the hassle for me to replace!

Sounds like I need to contact Amazon and see if they can send me another one and I'll take the shock and compare...

Mine's the same, about 4" freefall then slow.
I see no problem. I can still pull the handle, turn my back & not worry about a slamming gate.
I have seen videos of both ways.. some free fall for a few inches some are slow from the beginning... weird

Mine kind of did that, it was the cable getting pinched between the cylinder and the body, then when enough weight was on the tailgate as it was openeing, it pulled free and opened quickly for a fraction of a second, before it slowed again, and finished opening. It was not good! So, I bought a piece of 1" pipe insulation foam (about $1.50), and cut a piece and slipped it over the cylinder, so that the cable could not get between the cylinder and body. Works great now.

I'm glad you said that. Jogged my memory.
When I put mine on i had to move that rubber piece on the cable to keep it from catching on the shock. IIRC it took a couple of tries to get it right.

Mine drops fast at first too but for me it's not worth the hassle of returning either.

I doubt they will even make you return the shock. It doesn’t pay for them to have it shipped back just to throw it out. They will probably just send you a new one and tell you to discard the defective one. I would contact them.

Good tip. Mine has a tendency to do that too so I did the same thing today & now I don't have push the cable to the right to make sure it doesn't get caught. I thought the foam was too huge to fit but i cut it down so it fit tighter and electrician tape wrapped it completely and it compressed it down. No snags, works well.

I'm adding a couple pictures, to show what I did, in case anyone has a similar issue.20200523_121527.jpg 20200523_121518.jpg

....and this is why our trucks have turned into weenie-mobiles. We can't even be bothered to let our tail-gates down with our own hands.

Mine drops quickly at first, but changes to slowly at about a 1/3 also. It does what I need it to, didn't even think it was an issue.

I don`t think I have that cable pinch problem by looking at the cable when I close the tailgate. Amazon is sending me a new one so I`ll replace the shock and see what happens!

I found that bending the tailgate cable top plate just a little bit to outboard will guide the cable to outside the lift cylinder as DeeZee advises. The 2 inch long plastic clip on guide aids in that process, too, if installed at the right spot on the cable.

To those who question our manliness in using this device, let me assure you that the first time you are able to keep your tailgate from dropping onto your grandchilds head you will know that you did the right thing. If that doesn't convince you then you don't deserve to have grandchildren.

MIne has slight delay before activating too. No cable interference.
