Seems Harbor Freight has decided to officially add the replacement jack stands that most of us knew about to the recall. I received this email this morning:

To the Harbor Freight Community:

I'm writing to apologize. I often reach out to tell you about Harbor Freight's commitment to quality and all the investments we've made to deliver quality tools at the lowest prices. Your trust matters deeply to me and I'm proud of how far we've come. So when we have a product recall, it hurts.

A few months ago, we recalled our Pittsburgh 3 ton and 6 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56371, 61196 and 61197) due to a manufacturer's defect. We asked customers to return them and receive a gift card that could be used to purchase replacement jack stands. I felt terrible about that recall because you should never have a concern about the safety of any of our products.

Today, I feel even worse. I'm disappointed and embarrassed because we've identified a welding defect in a small number of the Pittsburgh 3 ton steel jack stands (SKU 56373) that replaced the recalled jack stands. We're now adding these jack stands to our recall. Unfortunately, this defect wasn't discovered during the initial recall investigation. If you own these jack stands or any of the jack stands in our original recall, whether or not you have had an issue with them, please stop using them immediately and bring them back to your local Harbor Freight Store for a full cash refund or store credit (see details here).

We have investigated all of our other Pittsburgh 3 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56371, 56372 and 57308) as well as the Pittsburgh 6 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56368, 56369 and 56370) and Pittsburgh 12 ton steel jack stands (SKUs 56374 and 56375) and did not find the defect. Although none of these other jack stands are being recalled, if you own any of them and have any concern whatsoever, please bring them back and we'll give you a full cash refund or store credit for those as well.

I want to apologize to all of our customers. While we've dramatically grown our team of engineers and inspectors, and intensified our tests and inspections, I assure you that the lessons learned from this will drive further improvement.

As the owner and founder of Harbor Freight, I want you to know that we stand behind every product we sell and that safety will always be our top priority.

Sincerely,
Eric Smidt

The reason they recalled the red stands is because of a Facebook post that showed a break beside the weld. They attempted to contact the original poster for inspection and to actually get their hands on said defective item.
That particular one in question still has not been received. Speculation says its a photoshop picture. So... in an abundance of caution they simply said recall the red ones too. My wife is a HFT sales manager and she told me there's a pallet and a half in the stock room that they can't put on the floor because of that picture on FB.
I have a set of the recalled gray ones and still use them. I also have a set of 6 ton stands and use them very often.
I wouldn't worry alot about it if you do need a set i wouldn't hesitate to get a set of 6 ton stands. 24" of height. Maybe overkill but hey they'll do the job.

I still haven't even replaced the original grey ones. They are under a box trailer that's currently functioning as a storage unit for crap from my mother-in-law's estate that my wife refuses to get rid of. I have much higher quality ones that are probably older than half the users here that I use under vehicles. :)

I just posted the email as an FYI for people.

All HFT jack stands are now on recall even the replacement stands. They're offering a full price gift card or cash money back.
They got ahold of the guy who made the video and got the stands from him. Its being investigated to figure out what happened.

This is the first I’ve heard about this. I’ve got a set of the 3 tons that I’ve used a lot and never had trouble..... should I return them?

No you should wait until they collapse and you are crippled or killed.

For the life of me I cannot imagine trying to save a few bucks on jack stands that I depend upon to keep a multi-ton truck from coming down on me. If I wanted to get crippled for life I would have joined the army and at least get some benefits.

My favorites have been in use for more than 40 years and have a welded triangular plate that reinforces the legs and also keeps the stand from digging down if used on dirt or gravel or soft asphalt.

I most certainly don’t use harbor freight jack stands to hold up my pickup with! I’ve got a set of 6 ton stands from tractor supply for that. So go be a **** elsewhere

I’ve got the torin big red 6 ton jack stands from tractor supply and they seem to be good stands. If you’ve got a truck bigger than a 1500 id definitely recommend 6 ton instead of 3 ton
