My policy:

if I'm building a 2WD street truck, I run the white letters or white outline out

2WD, dirt or gravel roads majority of the time, blackwall out

4WD street truck, where snow might be the only reason to use, white letters or white outline out

4WD, street and 50% or more offroad, blackwall out.

And to the guy commenting about Studebakers: https://www.fourwheeler.com/news/features/studebaker-4e7d-4x4/, I'd sure like to own one of these.

I took my driving test on my 16th birthday (1965) in a 1951 Studebaker pick up. Yeah, I'm old. I'll turn my white letters in when my girl friend stops washing my truck. I'll get a new girl friend too.

What? Are we driving Studebakers??? Put those white walls and white letters where no one can see them!! :)

I've never been a fan of the white facing out but it's not even so much a looks thing. With white letters out whenever you (or, more to the point.... your wife) rubs the tires hard on the curb the white backing shows through and it looks like crap. Pretty soon you're working towards a full-on whitewall.
I had curb feelers on my studebaker! Buy a set and you wont be worrying about the curbs.

I like them both ways but if the tire I chose has white letters, i.e. Michelin, I want to see them so they are out. If you scrap a curb get out the white grease marker and color them in.

I like the stock Firestones on my truck with the outlined white letters out.

Not hard to keep clean if you scrub the sidewall when you wash the truck and wheels. No big deal. But to each their own.

after five weeks of ownership, I have decided to leave mine just the way they came. Sort of matches the black license plate with white letters so besides the lights on the truck the white letters are the only thing that is it blacked out.

If your truck has a one piece tonneau cover and carpeting in the bed then white letters will be fine.

it’s funny as I feel the exact opposite about white letters.

Since my truck qualifies I decided on white letters out. (plus I think the white scorpion looks cool!)
Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus 275/55r20 OWL. They have a 3-peak snow rating.
Got them mounted & RF balanced today.
So far liking the ride, quiet and they handle the potholes better than the 305/50s I had on.

I love this debate. I’m personally big on white letters out, to the point I won’t buy tires without white letters. I love the 80’s square body’s with American racing wheels and white lettered BFGs look. Also I’m 31, so it’s not just an old guy thing but you can’t be afraid to do what you like. I see some trucks on the road that just make me ask why the hell but to each his own.

my new truck, if the stocks didn’t have white letters I’d have already replaced them

TBH honest, I like the white letters out on trucks.

I just don't like the upkeep to keep them white.

I have decided to get another set of rims and tires for travel on long trips. I want H rated tires with white lettering and the same overall size as my stock tires not to mess up the speedo. Also need to buy tpms to go with new rims. Then use my stock rims for in town work. And keep black walls out.
Here is a pic of my current steel wheels. Oh, and ditch these stupid GY tires!!!
