2500 6.4L Hemi 4.10's 'Off-Road'
So many of you know I have posted my sons journeys towing his TT across country and about the 1400 mile trip to Baytown, TX a few weeks ago in his 2018 2500 6.4. He is thinking about trading it for a 2500 Cummins now. He found a 2019 at Mcree Ford in Dickinson, TX, all white Laramie with black wheels with 14,000 miles for $63k but looking closer it is pretty scratched up. He doesn't need a diesel for his towing but for the miles he drives he thinks he would be further ahead. He has about 68,000 on his now. He bought it the end of July 2019 and has put 62,000 on it since then. Because his warranty is up he was thinking about trading it and thought the Cummins would hold it's value better. Personally I would probably stick with the 6.4 but understand that in another year a 3 year old gasser with 120,000 miles won't be worth much.

He needs to find something close to Houston, Galveston area as he only gets Sundays off so has to make this fit into his daily work schedule so can't go too far. He also wants at least a Big Horn with the full console and touch screen. He would probably be ok with a 2018 but not too many miles.

What kind of ballpark price is he looking at? Would $63k be reasonable for that one if it wasn't scratched? Sounds high to me?

He might consider finding a low mile '18, and avoid the CP4 pump issues on the '19+ Cummins.

$63k seems really high for a used big horn but prices are CRAZY right now so I am not surprised. If he can hold out a little longer I would just to see if the prices come down a bit (on used vehicles).

My well equipped 2016 Mega cab big horn was under $50K brand new.

Yeah he isn't in a hurry. And I have heard of Dennis Dillon but Idaho is too far for him to go. It's hard for him to just take a day or 2 off with his job. Might be able to look into buying sight unseen if it's brand new and having it delivered but he'd still have to get his truck to them too. Wondering what he will get for his considering prices are up right now? It's a 2018 SLT Outdoorsman with the Off-Road package but when you pull the VIN on the Ram site it says Big Horn. Has everything except leather, sunroof, and heated seats. Had 66,000 on it when we went to Texas a few weeks ago so probably 68,000-70,000 now. Tires are brand new. Guessing $32,000-35,000?

for that price, I would think he could get new. I've been looking at 2500 and 3500's with the Cummins, and most are between 42 and 60k. Though I've been looking at Tradesmen's motly.

Go to cargurus.com take a look at 2500"s with Cummins and set a distance he's comfortable with. You should find new in the range you are discussing. He can look at new or used but I'd think new with the miles he drives.

Sounds like a pretty good price. The full console is one of his biggest 'must haves, along with the touch screen. As you can imagine with 60,000 a year he spends a lot of time in his truck and has a bunch of equipment and paperwork in it, including laptop and printer. But even at $48k for a Tradesman maybe $5k-$10k to upgrade puts him at mid to upper $50's. Not bad.

We were at his house today talking to his wife and she said they were talking the other day and she wants him to leave that job like right now but she thinks he wants to stay until the end of the project about March or April. If he is leaving that soon I think he should just keep his truck. Once he leaves that job he won't be driving that many miles.

There are some deals around, he just has to look & be patient. I looked & dealt for approximately 2yrs. Then 2 weeks ago my deal came through- I talked to Dillion, Dave Smith, North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, Iowa.... brother looked in Houston for me. Finally got my Cummins, 2020 Laramie- 46.6 w/2011 F150 trade. Talk about smiles!!! Almost as good as the day I bought my Indian Roadmaster...... I said "almost"!
