You can just apply some pins to a 12v to 5v converter and push them into the rear view mirror connector. No need to tie into overhead console unless you need a constant 12v, not switched. No need to splice, tap, cut, drop overhead, etc... Pink & yellow on the mirror is switched 12v.

I'll be installing a Garmin Mini myself soon. Incredibly small and discreet.

I intend to install a second in the rear as well. Nice thing about app is you can actually have four so in theory you could have sides too.

1. What brand & model do you have? - VanTrue N1 (2017 version)
2. Did you go with front and rear cams? - Front Only
3. What features do you like? a> Power cable connects to mount, camera gets it's power form mount, no unplugging wires to remove camera. b> There's a "Keep the current recording" button.
4. What features do you not like? Ball joint on mount is too loose.
5. Is it easy to upload videos from the cam to your phone or to some form of media? (USB, SD Card, etc...) Everything records to a microSD card. You can plug the camera into USB or remove the card to transfer.
6. Lastly, is there feature you don't have that you wish came with your cam? A rear camera would be nice.

Garmin mini with a 256 gig card in it. Very high quality video, and it’s so small it’s almost completely unnoticeable. I have one in both my cars so I don’t have to worry about transferring it between them when I drive one or the other.

Yup. I completely forget it’s up there. Have it hard wired to my cig lighter so it’s completely autonomous. So much so that when I did the Hell’s Gate obstacle in Moab last month, I forgot that I provided a POV video of the climb using my own dash cam until the next day.

I have the Crosstour 1080P. It records actual time and GPS coordinates. I’ve been using it for three years now.

I also have a BlackVue front and rear with the OBD connection. Super easy to tuck all the wires up into the headliner and down the A-Pillar. Originally powered via fuse taps, but changed to the OBD connection.

Get the hardwire kit if and wire it into upper console. Took me less than 1/2 hour to splice it in. Wired to the rear slider positive. Comes on auto when truck starts. I have a $40 Yi 1080p dashcam, has WiFi built in to download videos. Been in truck around 3 years now, zero issues. I turned off the warning thing to tell you cars are close, was annoying. Is hidden behind mirror, I have forgot it even is there at times. Been to 110+ degree places and no issues.

Since I've moved to the land of the kamikaze driver I'm in the market for a dash cam.

I've read reviews and tried to learn a bit about options and features but I'm still not sure what to buy.

I'd like to get some input from those who have dash cams:

1. What brand & model do you have?
2. Did you go with front and rear cams?
3. What features do you like?
4. What features do you not like?
5. Is it easy to upload videos from the cam to your phone or to some form of media? (USB, SD Card, etc...)
6. Lastly, is there feature you don't have that you wish came with your cam?

Thanks for your time and input. It is appreciated.
This the one I got,
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076GYGVY5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

decent prize and superb night vision recording, it has Wi-Fi so you can download the videos to your phone on the spot through the app, it records if the car gets hit while parked, you can control sensitivity or turn it off completely, it takes MicroSD cards, I have had mine for 3 years, with no issues at all, run out of the 12V cigarette lighter, will post pictures of the mounting later.

BlackVue DR750-2CH,

I love this camera, yup, connects to my phone, small in form and a rear looking camera (2 CH) Its HD which is very important, if you get a hit and run, you will need to zoom in and read the plate that is why HD is very important!
This unit has wifi direct to your phone so you can actually view the videos live or scroll over past videos and watch them.
The unit has GPS so there is no question of where and when.
Another feature I like is the parking mode, it records while parked, I travel and stay in hotels so when I get in the truck in the morning it will alert me that there was an impact etc. The video will also be highlighted so I do not have to watch video after video trying to figure out which one has had the alert

I have a HD BlauPunkt in my Marauder, its just basic, works great but you have to remove the SD card to view the vids.

I opted for the VIOFO A-119 Pro dash cam .. HD resolution, 5MP image sensor, 7 element glass lens, 130 degree viewing angle, Super capacitor power, 2 inch LCD display, GPS logger, circular polarizing lens filter that cuts down glare, super night video and parking mode ... I also use a 128 gb SD card ... Once full, the cam automatically rolls over ... I've downloaded video onto my computer just to see the clarity and it is absolutely clear as a bell ... I just use the front ... Good luck in your search ...

I am using a Garmin65. Works well. No rear facing camera but it does parking videos when the vehicle is off. Voice control to save video and or pictures. Has a few other added features which I don't use. Imagee quality is superb. You can also connect to the camera via the Virb app should you need to access video or pix on a scene.

A119 V3, I've been very happy with it as its discreet, doesn't mind scorching TX heat, and didn't break the bank:

Similar to @Jessica Smith I got the Viofo as well. I've only had it a couple months (Viofo A129Pro Duo 4k) but so far I'm impressed and it's a keeper. Front and rear cams. 4K lets you read license plates from a substantial distance. It has GPS so if you're in an accident that goes to court, you can prove that the video is from the same place the accident took place, Wifi and an app you can do all of the settings with instead of pushing little tiny buttons, buffered parking mode, yada yada yada.

The wiring kit that comes with the link below (usually sold separately) must be used for parking mode but has a little device built in that monitors the battery voltage level so if it's parked for a long period of time, when your battery hits a certain level (mine's set for 12.2V) it will shut down the camera so you don't come back to a dead battery.

About the only things that might be considered a con is that 4k files are huge, so take up a lot of space. The link I attached below comes with a 128G card though so you have a lot of time before it starts writing over itself. You can also hit the panic button and it will lock that particular file so it can't be overwritten. It's not the sleekest looking device out there, but small enough to not be intrusive. Sorry I don't have a pic of mine installed to show you, but it's definitely not in the way of my vision. Lastly, it's pretty much a permanent installation. The GPS module acts as the camera mount, so you can pull the camera out pretty easily if you don't want it stolen, but you can't carry it from one car to the other. Although after running all the wires for the power/front/rear cams, I wouldn't want to pull it out....

Hope this helps. I'd check out all of these that folks have mentioned on youtube. Seems there are a ton of folks that do nothing but review these things.

I love having a dashcam. Insurance companies are rotten to the core. It's better to have solid evidence with a dashcam video than to hope a witness sticks around after an accident. Any dashcam is better than none.

I have a few vehicles so I opt for the cheepest walmart ones and they work well enough for what I need. Everyone should have a dashcam. Going to start giving them out as Christmas presents :) the stress of being blamed or having to come out of pocket for another drivers negligence is a thing of the past if you have a $25 dashcam. Mine have already easily paid for themselves :)
