I've ordered all the parts for my 2014 2500, can't wait!

I do have a question though for a friend of mine; he just bought a 2021 1500 big Horn that included push to start but no proximity entry. Does anyone know if he can just add the correct handles and door antennas and how much wiring might be needed in the doors (or elsewhere).

I'm assuming since he has push start already he probably wouldn't need a new RF hub...

I think thats a 5th gen? Not sure if this mod applies in that case.

Yeah, I think it would be, but I didn't see any similar thread in that forum so I figured I'd ask here just in case... He may be SOL for now, unless I can convince him to experiment lol

It looks like its possible. There is a how-to thread on a different forum about 5th gen rams.

Yes, the 5th gens are pretty easy. He needs the handles (different than the 4th gen handles), the rear antenna behind the license plate, a pair of add-on harnesses for the doors, and an add-on harness for the rear antenna. There’s a detailed how-to thread over on 5thgenrams. I have a bunch of the door/rear antenna harnesses.

Oh wow, thanks for the responses. I'll take a look at the other forums for that info.

@Jimmy07, are you selling any of those 5th gen harnesses? I can see if my buddy is interested depending on the cost of all the parts..

Thanks in advance.

Great write up. Just had a question as I did something similar to my 2016 Ram but just upgraded to a 2018 3500. Does the truck recognize when the key leaves the truck? With my old one I had to have the key to start the truck, but after it was started I didn't need the key. Actually ended up leaving the key at my mother in laws house, driving 4 hours away before realizing it was sitting in her house. Shut it off to get gas and it had to sit there for 2 days until I could get back there and get the key to start it. And going to go through the 145 pages of comments, but does the obd program allow you to alter the auto start to work with a diesel for delay? Thanks

You can leave the truck with the key and it will stay running. It will chime if the key is out of range. My wife hates it when I leave her in the truck to run into a store cause it chimes the whole time I’m gone with the key.

Awesome! That is what I was hoping for as that is what it should do, but for some reason the kit I got, it wouldn't do that. You say that it chimes, but will it not drive and state "Key has left the vehicle" as if it was a normal install? @DoughRat19 you say you are making harness as well? I am looking to start collecting parts, I would be interested in buying one!

I used the Alfa tool and built a harness to add push button start to my truck. My truck is a 2014 and will definitely chime and have the message flash on the dash if I leave it running and walk away with the fob in my pocket but I've never tried actually starting it and then driving away without the fob. Now that you mention this I'm going to try this with mine and see what happens. It would definitely suck to drive off without the fob and end up stranded because the truck didn't warn me.

Every other vehicle Ive driven with push to start will happily let you drive away. However, I know the transmission interlock for the trucks are electronic so maybe it can work in conjunction and not let it drive away (but I doubt it).

Friend of mine was 100% convinced I couldnt take his Maxima without the keyfob but with the car already running. I shoulda just taken it and gone to Mexico lol

Yeah I as stated in the original post, I drove 4 hours in December. Stopped at a Meijer so my wife could run in to get some stuff before running home, shut the truck off..and...yeah I was pissed lol. Why I want to make sure with this method I'm crossing the T's and dotting the I's. Trying to go through the pages, but 145...hoping not much has changed from the original post or the fact that I have a 2018 diesel.

My wife has a 2017 Durango and after like 200 ft or something it slams the brakes won't let you drive, at least that is what we have been told...honestly decided to just look it up, and it doesn't say anything about it killing the engine, just wont be able to start it.

So, I'm a ******* lol...but as long as it chimes and tells me like hey you don't have the key then I'll be happy!

I am stunned that Chrysler built in something good lol

I will try it on my truck when I get a chance.

I know it will drive away as I think it would be a safety issue if the fob stopped communicating with the truck for some reason if you were driving. I'm just wondering if it will chime and show the message on the EVIC if I were to say start the truck and drive away and leave the key in the garage or something like that. It would suck to be a 100 miles away and realize I left it at home.

Yep this is the theory I wanted to ask about and have tested before I commit!

So, I just tested this out on my wifes durango. I have been banboozled! I drove around the block just fine, just couldn't start it once I killed it. So back to the forums and make sure their is no updates to my truck being a diesel or just since the original post is a few years old. If anyone does have any premade harness, I'd gladly buy them to make you some money for extra parts and save me the headache of making them lol.

I'm gonna try mine tomorrow. I have a 2014 and didn't let them install the auto park feature when you open the door in reverse so I'm curious what it will do. I know it will let you open the door and get out of the truck when it's in gear which I wish it didn't do. It will also not automatically put itself in park anymore if I try to turn it off when it's in gear. A chime goes off and says the truck is running but if you have the stereo loud you can't hear it. The truck used to automatically put itself in park if shut it off in gear before I added the push button start. I has been corrected with the auto park update but I don't want that feature flashed to my truck.
