Meant to comment last night. I'm 24 hours official boys!

Radio in the truck today.....no contacts. But I hit a repeater about 25 miles out in opposite direction I was driving. We shall see. Brought inside. I'll be taking my lunch break early tomorrow and jump in on a breakfast net. I. The house I'm easily hitting 45 miles with 25watt.

Well there is a few things to think of. Bands your using defines the type of antenna, off road use again defines placement. On my truck I use off road I have a front push bar mounts. My touring truck i go off and on road. And use a dual band antenna, a
BROWNING BR-180 Amateur Dual-Band Mobile Antenna. If I'm out in Southern Arizona near Yuma. I have a 40ft wire off a pole mounted on the rv and our BaoFeng UV-5R8W since I'm close enough to repeaters the whole winter, and even if I'm out moving around the desert I can still hit repeaters or others in my group, since we all carry radios. I stay away from antennas that have springs, weather can rust the spring and cause problems down the road.
All my regular trucks have a Yssesu Ft 891.
For my rv I have digital data/voice for out in the middle of no where. My rv has a fold mount holding a multi band 2 meter/70cm Dual Band Collapsible Copper J Pole Antenna by KC0SDV.
So application. Application, application is paramount

YUMA? Senator Wash by any chance?

Ordered the needed LMR-400 coax today for the base radio. 2/3 of the antenna mast is up. Just need the snow to melt off the roof so I can finish this!! Snow is supposed to melt by Thursday and the coax will get here by then if im lucky!!! Otherwise ill be waiting another 2 weeks it looks like.

Obviously off topic for the thread but maybe a private message should occur. Curious what your last setup is like. I'm debating on what to setup at home. Currently I'm at a discone not peeking my roofline but positively hitting repeater 45 miles due south with direct roof block on 25w.

I'm curious about a dedicated dual band antenna mounted on either 20-25' or mast or even a small tower.

The finance committee just shivered....

Hey good luck there. I'll tell you I was a "good student" never had issues getting good grades in school or college but man was I nervous as heck with this. My question grouping included a lot of my weaker points and my score was not near what I wanted. But oh well.

The last week I just hammered questions where and when I could. Again good luck to you. I've already made a couple contacts and liking the ability finally.

PS. the question about "hold mic closer to face...yeah. I got told that on my first contact. Apparently am vs fm reception on mics. Felt like an outright....amateur...get it?....yeah I'm now a dad so the crappy jokes are starting

Nice! Now, to keep this related to RAM, how would one go about mounting that to my 1500? LOL

Nice height. I'm in the middle of an open field so 15' of 1 1/4" galvanized really wobbles a lot. I wanna go higher with dedicated 2m, 11m, and tv. But I think it's gonna take a tower. And some of that fancy lmr400 everyone talks about lol

Perhaps this can become an official ham radio thread living in a ram forum as long as all our pics include a reference to our truck.
