Hello,

Traveling and I notice I have 30 per cent oil serviceability before change required. Owners manual says when "change oil" msg comes on to change within 500 miles. Message has not come on but wondering if I understand the manual correctly, when msg comes on do I still have 500 miles before required? 2018, 2500, 6.4, 4.10 4x4

Thanks,
David in Texas

I do not rely on that meter , I think 10,000 or more between changes is way to long . Others will disagree ,however for the cost I will change it much sooner, it helps for me to sleep more soundly. Also I don’t put that many miles on in a yearly basis.

The light will come on at 10 or 15%.

If I don't ride in dusty conditions or idle excessively (I don't do either) I change oil and filters at 5000 miles. For me oil is cheaper than metal. Also never heard of anything but the threads on the drain plug wearing out because of changing oil to much.

This is pretty much me. 5k oil changes are an easy and cheap insurance against major issues down the road. Is there a possibility my lifters will still give out, or something will find its way inside the engine that shouldn't be there? Yep. But I can rest easier knowing I did everything I could to prevent it.

I agree with all the above. My thinking is I'm traveling and about 1500 miles from home and would rather the selling dealership do all the services. Normally I change out oil PUP 0-40 at about 20% life left. Freeway miles and wondering if I'll be ok? I'm still under warranty.

Long haul trucks with the new Detroit Diesel engines have a 50k mile oil change interval. The old series 60 engines were 15k miles so I would say all the engines these days are getting more efficient along with the oils. So I go with factory recommend intervals but still sometimes I’ll change it earlier.

5000 miles for today's oils in FI engines is just wasting oil. Have you ever had your oil analized?
I do not have it analized, changing it at 5000 miles I'm hoping I don't have to. As far as wasting oil it is recycled so I don't feel like I'm wasting anything but my money but it makes me feel better which has worked for me for 45 years.

Hemi engines need 5000 mile oil changes due to the poor lubrication of the valve train. This is a well known problem with the Gen III Hemi engine design, there are lots of posts on this on various threads (Hemi Tick, Synthetic Oil, etc.).

The partial and narrow lubrication porting to the valve lifters and camshaft lobes are prone to deposit flow restrictions, even with the best synthetic oils. These engines have nothing to do whatsoever with diesel engine lubrication or any other false analogy.

Sorry bu I think this has gotten way off topic from what you are asking. Just change the oil within the 500 miles after the light comes on. Or if you want change it sooner.

And in 45 years, the oil composition and engines have not changed at all. Yet you change at 5000 miles instead of 3000 that was the recommendation 45 years ago. How often do you change your spark plugs?

I did change it sooner, not because they told me to but because I ran them back then a lot harder and my cars turned a lot more RPM'S than now because of less gears and lower gear ratios. I also change my plugs when I feel like they need it, not when a book or anybody else says so.

I don't think it's possible for engine oil to be too clean. Some people may change it much sooner than necessary but that's preferable to not changing often enough.

If U R in TX, with the heat, I change every 5,000 and rotate tires, way too much heat (FYI: I change every 5K and rotate tires on MY 19). But U prob be OK at 7500. 10K on oil, with the temps in TX, well, your truck, LOL. And that funky %%% meter, it is there more as a reminder, not absolute rule, just IMHO...

My oil minder is my odometer and how/ where I drive.I document everything in a maintenance book.I've put hundreds of thousands of miles on vehicles by changing my lubrication at less than manufacturer states to do so.I've never had an engine/trans/ diff failure in any. Some of my classic antique vehicles have had failures due to bad prior maintenance.Especially woman owned and mechanic owned vehicles.
