Does anybody know what the MPG difference is between the SO & HO? We talking .5mpg difference or more like 2 or 3mpg.
I have not seen a side by side test of otherwise equal trucks, so am left to WAG it based on anecdotes. I'd wager it's probably a good 2 empty, and a smaller gap when pulling.

On Edit: I'll add that I think the Aisin plays into this. While they are very durable, I think there is quite a bit of power loss through it, especially around town when it is running through the gears.

Yes hoping the the new tranny set up they are talking about fixes both of those issues. Just wish they would come on with it! I would like to hear some reviews before I go out and get one. They are saying possibly another ZF 8 speed or the Allison 10 speed. Sounds like the Allison has already proven itself over at GM.

From what I have seen feedback on I'm going to say 0. You are not going to see a measurable difference between the 2 motor/trans combos. It certainly is not going to be a 2-3mpg difference.
I do not have a HO, this is just based on feedback from others I have talked to or read. They are not getting any better or worse mpg then a SO.

It is NOT the 10 speed “Allison”. Blows my mind that folks get this so twisted....

The 10 speed “Allison” is not an Allison, it is a GM-built transmission that was jointly developed with Ford. GM merely pays Allison to use their name, no more and no less.

The 9 speed Allison is an Allison built, Allison designed unit. That is the one that will hopefully go into Rams.

The 10 speed has had issues in both GM and Ford trucks. It’s proven to not be so great. The 9 speed will have none of that.

Doesn't sound like it takes too much to blow your mind. You need to lighten up Francis! The only twisted is your *******. I am only going on multiple postings on the internet. Don't really give a crap if it's a 9 or 10 speed! Just something better than what is currently in the HD's!

What weights are you looking to pull? That's a big difference is the capacity. From what I have read, people tuning the SO diesel to get to the stock HO power.

Driving unloaded I do not notice a difference. Pulling my 12K toyhauler, the difference between my 2013 RAM 2500 SO diesel and this 2020 RAM 3500 HO diesel is amazing.

So the real questions is: what trailers are in your sights and what are those weights? And if you want towing capacity, you will want a Tradesman edition. The upper trims have 800-1200 pounds less payload than my Tradesman does. I found that looking at the door labels on truck on the dealer's lot Jan-April of this year. I have a 2020 RAM 3500 Tradesman CC LB 4x4 DRW with 5475 payload.

What have you seen in mpg difference?

I've done a moc 2019 trade in on a 3500 with the HO & it looks like it (engine itself) really holds it value unlike some of the other packages/add on's. Most add on's you only get half of what you paid for it on the front end.

Most of the diesel engines in pickups hold their value well. My first diesel was a new first year Duramax (01). It held 80% of it's value when I traded it in a few years later.

So then, you DO care but are too lazy to figure out what differences are. Got it.

The 9 speed would be an upgrade to the Aisin and 68RFE. The 10 speed (which isn’t even in play thankfully), would be a downgrade to both. There’s your difference

There is no need for a 10 speed tranny with these Cummins engines. They have so much torque over such a wide rpm range there is no need for that many gears to keep the engine in a narrow rpm range.

Those big old motor homes weighing in at 50K plus pounds and pushed by a Cummins ISX coupled to a 6 speed Allison do just fine.

I can see the need for additional gears in a constant stop and go, it would lessen the burden on the driveline.
