I recently bought a 2019 classic 5.7. I changed the oil immediately after purchase since I didn’t know what was in it or how long it was since the last oil change. I used Valvoline full synthetic 5w20 and a Royal purple filter. It has 34,000 miles on it.

Everything was fine but I noticed it’s quiet when first started when cold. However, if I drive it a while (30 minutes or more), and shut it off, it ticks on start up for a few seconds and then quiets down….not every time but often.

I’ve got a stash of Royal Purple 5w30 and I'm thinking I might give it a try to see if there’s any difference. Good idea????

Another 2019 classic 5.7 owner here. I bought mine a year old with 15K miles on it. Currently at 43K miles. I've only used supertech full synthetic 5w30 in it and I've been alternating with either MoS2 additive or LubeGard biotech. I'm not a big additive guy but I impulse bought a case of each shortly after getting the truck and being paranoid of hemi tick after going down the worm hole of all the threads on it. Once those are gone I probably won't buy them again. I do my oil changes at a 5000 mile interval and use inexpensive Champ filters- again, bought a case of those.

Only one time in the ~17 months I've owned the truck have I heard what I believe is hemi tick. It was after a couple of short succession cold starts to move my truck around the driveway. On the 3rd start to head to work it ticked loudly for ~3 seconds and then silence. My cold starts are LOUD too because I deleted the muffler on my stock single exhaust. I can still hear undue noises though.

I've listened to every start on this truck hot or cold. So far it was just the once.

This subject has been beat into the ground. Every truck is different. It was about that same mileage mine decided to tick. I was running Mobil 1 synthetic and a wix filter. I immediately ran seafoam through my crank case drove it at 60 mph for 100 miles and then dumped it. At the time there wasn't a lot of knowledge like now. Most people were running mobil 1. I went with Castrol Edge and a puraltor boss filter. I am now 5 years down the road and no more tick. I agree with @PoMansRam adding lubegard. I run that in mine and its super quiet. As I have said time and time again. Every engine is different. Redline works for some, Mobil 1 for others, PUP for most, and then like mine its Castrol edge. Your best bet is try redline first. It may like it, it may not. You may have to try another oil. Hopefully you get it right the first time and it goes away and stays away.

I own a 2019 Laramie, I get the cold start piston slap and even more so when the temps go down below 30 degrees, I put redline 5w30w in it for the warm months and 0w20w for the winter months, I too have the tick when I start it after sitting for 2-3 hours but it goes away after 5-10 seconds, when I start it cold no tick just the piston slap for a few seconds, the tick I get sounds like marbles in a tin can, I call it the Tinney tick, I think that's the lifters pumping up, or clearance between the rocker arm and valve stem, these engines have allot of noises, all you can do is a Lubrication Strategy using a good oil filter, I use a royal purple 20-820 and redline oil.

Thank for the replies. I’ve decided to change the oil to Royal Purple 5w30 with a Royal Purple filter and see what happens. I’ll post the results after 1,000 miles or so. Hope the ticking subsides????????

I read on another thread regarding oils on this forum that Royal Purple oil is basically cheap oil with purple dye added.
You're paying for the dye. I went with Redline 5W20 and a royal purple filter. No issues yet and it definitely quieted the motor down after 2000 miles.

There are many threads regarding Royal Purple oil, some pro and some con. I’ve used it for many years without issues and it definitely made a difference in a 2007 5.4 Ford F-150 that was famous for valve train noise. I also used it in a corvette with a loose timing chain and it eliminated most of the noise until I got a chance to replace the timing gears and chain. I bought my daughter an older subaru that used a quart of oil every 800-1000 miles. I switched to royal purple because that’s all I had on the shelf. Oil consumption dropped in half.

So, all of my experiences with royal purple have been good and even better than expected.

Bob is the oil guy forum has many threads that rate royal purple equal to a amsoil.

Junk or not, I have several quarts I bought on sale and I’ll certainly use them until gone. Then, I may try something else. I dunno.

I use Amsoil 5w20 and a 15oz bottle of lube guard. Also use an SRT filter. Engine is quiet and smooth.

Your engine is fine. The problem is that the HEMI doesn't really like thin oils. Valvoline Synthetic 5W-20 is one of the thinnest 5W-20 oils out there. What you're hearing are dry lifters that are being pumped up with oil again. You may try several different oils in the same class, and waste your time. Or you can switch to Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 and never deal with this issue again. Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 has been the best for lifter bleed in my experience, even better than Red Line 5W-30. There are other Euro oils in the ACEA A3/B4 class that work, like Castrol EDGE 0W-40, Pennzoil Euro 0W-40, Quaker State FS 5W-40, and so on, but I found Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 to be the best. The oil filter doesn't matter that much. Use Royal Purple 20-820 or Fram Ultra XG2 or FS2. There are some other options out there, but these two are the best. You may question my recommendation, however, if you don't want to waste time with this issue, then just use Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 and be done with it. Also, if you use a bigger filter, you will have to fill the engine up with 7.5 quarts of oil. I use 8 quarts total without issue, but that's me. I hope this helps.

I made the switch to Royal Purple 5w30 and all is well. MDS works exactly as before, and mpg is the same after a 50 mile trip.

The only difference is that the oil pressure at idle is a few psi more, but hiway psi is the same.

I live in Los Angeles so cold weather is not a issue here. I have a 2019 laramie so running 0w40 which is not the recommended weight will not be harmful to the engine?

You live in a warm and dusty environment, so running 0W-40 will be actually beneficial to your engine. I live in a warm and humid climate, and I am running a thicker oil, and just pulled the valve covers off at almost 40K miles to change the seals and everything looks like new. I am running Red Linen 5W-30 which is even thicker than Mobil 1 0W-40, but will be going back to Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 on my next oil change because it's the best oil for the hemi and I've experienced the least amount of lifter bleeddown with that one. The 6.4 Hemi shares the same lifters, CVT, and other components, and has the exact same engine tolerances and clearaces and runs 0W-40 as the recommended oil. Mobil 1 0W-40 used to be the SRT factory fill before Shell got the contract, so now it's Pennzoil. Give it a try and report back and let us know how she runs. There is no reason not to try it.

I purchased several oil change specials at Advance Auto with Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 and Fram Titanium filter. First oil change was good. Second time around had two noisy startups. Immediately changed oil filter to MO-339 and problem has not happened again on that and subsequent changes. Will only use Mopar filter in the future at 5000 mile intervals.

I was using shell rotella 5w20 and fram ultra synthetic oil filter for my 2019 classic, but after the second oil change the engine develops the tick on idle, so I went to the dealer for the diagnosis, they said, nothing wrong, just keep driving, then I change the oil again but this time at the dealer, they fill the engine with conventional oil, mopar 5w20 ,and mopar filter ,well the tick almost is gone,so for some reason my hemi don't lake a full synthetic oil and the fram filters.

I’ve seen a few posts indicating that some dealers actually refuse to use full synthetic oil. They either use conventional or semisynthetic oil. Seems to me that full synthetic would be the best for any engine but maybe that’s not the case.

My son has a 2015 Ram Hemi and always had the oil changed at the dealer using conventional oil. At 106,000 miles his lifters ate the camshaft.

Bottom line is….who knows???? Ugh

The oil issue was a big surprise for me,full synthetic oil 5w20 make my engin tick,so I go back to conventional oil and FCA oil filter, strange but there we go,the downsize of this is,now I have to change the oil every 5000 km.

I’m pretty much old school, coming from the days when a 3,000 mile oil change was a stretch.

I just can’t bring myself to go more than 5,000 miles regardless of the oil I’m using.

I remember when my dad used Kendall oil exclusively because they developed the first oil that could go 2,000 miles. Back then oil changes were done every 500-1,000 miles!!

People thought the “peacesign” was for victory but it stood for 2,000 mile oil changes. Haha. They still use that logo today, though it is manufactured by Phillips 66. Just a little trivia on Christmas Day….

I'm the same way with certain things that are imprinted into my brain, I'm still not there with the 5,000-oil change, I see what the different weather temps do to motor oil and cold air being more dense the engine runs richer causing the oil to get dirty sooner.

Modern Hemi’s are known for their tick, if it doesn’t tick I would worry.
