Spark Plugs

Hey all.

So I have a 2018 5.7 Laramie down in Australia and I’ve just been quoted $120 each for new spark plugs plus labour, and apparently there are 16 of them.

Is there any other comparable plugs? Seems a lot of money for spark plugs.

I tried to buy plugs for my engine, and no part store in the world even carries them. Not even the dealer, even tho they say can tune it up.

Although that is a terrible price for spark plugs it's not as bad as it looks. Currently the Australian dollar is equal to 71 cents of US dollar. Still well worth a few hours and buying a magnetic socket and extension. I advise squirting some penetrating oil into the hole first and letting it soak for a while. The truck will smoke a little when you start it but it makes them easier to remove. Thread the new plugs by hand using the magnetic socket and extension. Make sure not to cross thread them in the aluminum head. Once seated us a torque wrench to torque spec. Don't overtighten.

Yeah, don't do that!

Use anti seize paste on the threads before you put them in. We use it on all our aircraft engines.

anti seize everything, well almost everything, they make something special for certain uhum applications.

I believe NGK advises not to use antiseize, the threads are already treated.

1. Anti-seize
NGK spark plugs feature trivalent plating. This silver or chrome-colored finish on the threads is designed to provide corrosion resistance against moisture and chemicals. The coating also acts as a release agent during spark plug removal. NGK spark plugs are installed at the factory dry, without lubrication or anti-seize.
Anti-seize can act as a lubricant, altering torque values up to 20 percent, increasing the risk of spark plug thread breakage and/or metal shell stretch. Thread breakage can sometimes involve removing the cylinder head for repair. Metal shell stretch changes the heat rating of the spark plug and can result in serious engine damage caused by pre-ignition. Do not use anti-seize or lubricant on NGK spark plugs. It is completely unnecessary and can be detrimental.

Don't tell that to the guy who removed his factory plugs only to have one break during removal, just a couple months ago. You are dam-ned if you do dam-ned if you don't. Here is a thought on how to do it if you opt to do it, and I will always opt for it.

I would agree with that, Burla. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I personally didn't use antiseize on mine, and I have fortunately never had one break on me either (and pray I never do). I have known a few Ford owners that it has happened to, though

I sometimes wonder if it is an environmental thing or if the line worker gorilla-****** it during the install, or somebody else did on a repair.

****** = fist ed, the word-censorship on this forum sucks.

If your mechanic uses copper grease on spark plug threads well as torquing them down, then be warned! NGK is adamant this procedure should be avoided on all costs. I have a neighbor who left OEM plugs in his 2004 RAM until 134K miles........it ran perfectly but he thought they should be changed??

I have changed my copper Champions every 30K miles......STUPIDLY hard to do on driver's side (back 2 sets).......GRRRRR!! Each time the removed copper plugs looked GREAT!!

My dealer said Platinum or Iridium plugs wouldn't work in my 2008 RAM.....WTF??

Aussie-John....I'd just run your truck until you have an indication your plugs need changing (fuel mileage or misfire)....you may be VERY surprised!!

Ok,, One should only use the manufactures' recommended spark plugs anything else can and will create issues..You can go to any number of sites and get the correct NKG sparkplugs for a "reasonable" amount of $$. It's not that big a deal to swap them out, if you can't do it yourself find a reputable tech to do it for you,, 2 hours of time,(and that's stretching it) is a fair labor charge. Just my 2 cents worth but some of the things I see posted here ring of ridiculous.

Spark plug life increased tremendously when in the 1970's lead was no longer being added to gasoline. I used to re-gap plugs every 5k mile with leaded gas but with unleaded my change interval is 97K miles or more with my cars and trucks.

GM knew that tetraethyellead was destructive but the company also had the patent on it and if engines needed to be replaced sooner that was also good for business. Unfortunately people have not updated their maintenance practices in the private sector to reflect better engines, no lead in gas, and much better lubricants.

Commercial fleet operators with thousands of vehicles are much more enlightened in the service intervals as they want to protect their investment but not throw money away with premature oil or filter or spark plug changes.
