The air cleaner cap or cover on my air intake resonator is loose and cracking in back. This is on my 2013 1500 3.6 Pentastar. I am concerned that this cover is attached in a way that, may allow air leaks into resonator where it used to be attached. Or is this piece just ornamental? I'll try to attach photo. I have 105,000 miles on it and have the lifetime warranty, but haven't checked dealer. Doubt if this is covered.
Thanks

It depends on where the crack is. The cover can crack and not allow air instruction into the resonator if the crack is on the edge. I had one crack right on the "3.6" and was replaced under warranty.

Thanks. I will consult my dealership. I do have warranty. I checked online parts and could get the complete resonator for about $130. The dealer parts quoted $185.
My deductible is $100. May be worth going to dealer to see if they'll cover it, in case anything else is wrong. Just hate the hassle at dealership.

Well if you include a picture of the crack I might be able to tell you if it would leak air? Even if so, it's nothing a little duct tape likely couldn't fix...

Here are some pics. The cover is loose and only holding in back. The crack is at rear of the cover. At first I didn't think much of it, but couldn't find how it was attached to resonator. So I'm concerned thst where it is popping loose, it might have cracks or open mounting holes on top of resonator that will let unfiltered air in. I don't think the crack is hurting anything as its on outer edge of the cover. Thanks for any advice.

Yeah, that's exactly how mine looked when craçked. Almost like the plastic mold had a flaw in it. It's difficult to say without removing the resonator and inspecting, but if it's just the lip that is cracked it should be fine for now. I'd imagine you'd hear a pretty loud whistle if it were sucking air through a crack like that.

I have mine stored at my old house still. Next time I'm there I can take a picture of the underside so you can see what it looks like. I should be there either tomorrow or Thursday.

I checked dealer. They said the cover isn't covered under max warranty, but resonator should be if its leaking. I don't hear any noises like lts sucking air.
Maybe your pics will show how its attached.
Thanks for the input.

I should add, the resonator itself is only held by 2 rubber grommets in rear that snap over plastic posts, and the clamp on throttle body intake. Mine was loose at clamp. That's what started my inspection and questions.

Yeah, they take it off for oil changes. That would be my guess as to why it was loose.

I'm sure you're right. But its not necessary to remove for oil change if person knows what they are doing. That could also cause the cracking if they are grabbing the cover and twisting or pulling it.

Alright, there is quite a bit of dressing there. The crack can go all the way to the recessed area on top before reaching the resonator manifold. I'd say you're good...

Thanks SitKneeBend. You have certainly been a big help! I'll just keep an eye on the crack then.
By the way, could you tell how that cover is attached to the resonator? I feel that if I could resecure mine, it may vibrate less under load and delay further cracking.

Unfortunately, I believe it is actually not attached but rather a one piece mold and/or permanently glued together. I'm pretty sure it is the "roof" of the resonator manifold and not just aesthetic. I'll double check on Monday and let you know for sure.

Ok, it appears that the "cover" is permanently attached and is not removable without compromising the top of the resonator manifold. You might have some success with super glue to prevent the crack from spreading further. Especially if you don't need to remove the resonator for oil changes.

Thanks again for all your work on this. I may go the super glue route as it doesn't appear to be leaking.
