Hi all,

I have almost 2K miles on my new 22 Ram Big Horn 4x4, night addition and I have a couple questions and quirks. I’d like to see if others have seen the same thing. Sorry for the length, but it’s easier in one posting.

I lose the radio control button function on the left side of the steering wheel from time to time. That would be for scrolling through channels (up and down) and scrolling through pre-sets (the button). I find if I rest the radio (holding in the volume and power buttons for 10 seconds), the function comes back. Happened twice so far. I think it might have to do with using the buttons while in the google maps, but I’m not sure.

Another odd thing is the backup camera goes out sometimes. It will be fine, then it will flash and go to a blue screen. I can go in and out of reverse, and it does not come back on. After the truck is actually off for some time, it works fine. Happened a few times now.

Now just a question…. How is the average MPG calculated? Seems pretty straight forward, miles driven divided by gallons used. But it seems like the “average” displayed changes way to quick to be an actual average. I’m thinking it’s weighted or used with time driven, or something like that. I can start out at 15 MPG and within a 10 to 20 miles be up to 17 MPG. No way that can be an actual average. BTW, I’m hoping the mpg gets a little better, but I have 3.92 gears, so I’m not too sure about that and I’m using 87 gas.

Anyway, thanks for reading. Any insight is appreciated.

David

The average meter will go up and down based on "calculations" being made, and it will jump up and go down just as fast. That be the "Famed" lie o Meter. Fill up your truck med speed to first click. Drive, then fill up same way and hand calc. U will find yer city 13-18, and Highway 17-21. But may be slightly off if U have E-torque which I do not have and U have 3.92 gears and I am geared 3.21. Gas Debate: Too many threads like oil. I personally use the recommended 89 vs the acceptable 87. Also, my lawn mower runs better on 89 and my chain saw needs 89, so I just do the same grade on all stuff, but that is IMHO.

If U have to reset radio a lot, may need to be reflashed and Camera going to Blue Screen, either flash or maybe lose connections in tail gate or behind radio. Not had either issue on MY 19. Could also be a lose connection in SW controls. All dat since new truck be Dealer, Hello.

AGAIN, all my opinions IMHO.

Thanks for the replay. lie-o-meter, I like that. I guess I'll do my own math for the mpg. I figured about 17 to 18 overall, especially since it's mostly flat FL driving. As for the gas... the 89 is about 10% more in price right now. $.30 more per gallon at about $3+ a gallon. I'm not sure if I'd see a 10% increase in mpg. It'd be like 16mpg to 17.5mpg, I'm not sure if I'd see that. I see there is a update software option in the setup, I'm guessing if I connect to my wifi it will update?

thanks again.

Driving a 2021 5.7 Big Horn here, so these are my impressions on that model, though I would suspect there haven't been any major changes to how they are presenting MPG. I keep track of my MPG through an app on my phone and like to compare to what the truck shows me.

I could be wrong but it appears the RAM way of calculating MPG is solely based on how many miles you got out of your last fill-up and that's about it. If you had a particularly bad tank of driving with lots of stop-and-go, idling, etc., then your MPG reading is going to start out looking fairly bad when you fill up again. Hit the highway at cruising speeds for a few miles and you'll see that MPG guesstimate shoot up because you're far outpacing what your last tank gave you.

Again, that's been my observation in putting just over 10k miles on my 2021, both in regards to the MPG reading and the miles left on the current tank reading. There doesn't seem to be as much intelligence put in the algorithm as a Ford Escape I used to own, which would look at the last few hundred miles you had driven.

One last note, I've logged every single tank fill-up through this app for the last 6'ish years now, across three vehicles from different manufacturers. All three consistently tell me that I'm getting about 1.5MPG more than what I actually logged for the tank.

...

That's interesting, I don't see how it could be based on "fill-up". Does it know how any gallons are going into the tank at fill-up? I could be filling up at 3/4 a tank. Anyway, I'm sure it's not miles/gallons used, that would be too easy. thanks.

The truck has no idea how much actual fuel is going into your tank. Everything is based off of data stored in the computer (XX ounces for every XX millivolts put out by the level sensor (the higher the level the more millivolts the sensor puts out). The calculation is "on the fly" as you drive the truck. I don't know what it uses but I'm sure there's plenty of sensors it uses to calculate your instantaneous MPG. That is averaged out over time since you last reset the MPG screen (and I think it resets at 10K miles if you let it go that long but don't quote me on that) and gives you your overall average.

Many of us hand calc and, at least for me, the truck "estimation" is usually about .5 mpg higher than what I get from my simple method (miles driven divided by gallons added).

As for your steering controls I have not heard of that issue. The backup camera, however, I have read of. If you can soft reset the infotainment and both start working then that definitely seems like a software issue. I would take the truck in and have the dealership either update the software (if there is a newer revision) or re-install the current version to see if that is more stable and solves your issues.

ok, I think I might get it. The average might be more of an average of the instant calculation. Or, an average of a sampling of the instant mpg. That might actually make a little more sense. Thanks.

I have 2022 6.4L gas with 1,800 miles. I had one issue with the radio. There is a reset for it in the vehicle system screen, try it. I wish I had a radio with buttons. I Hate the screen. Here’s a question, how come when you hit the “lower fan” button it only goes to 1 and not to “off”?

Since it's a big horn I'm guessing you have the 8.4 screen. I've not heard of any blue screen back up camera issues on those but they are more common on the 12" screen and that I've seen on my own truck. It is a software issue and I'm not aware of an update to fix this as of yet.

As for the MPG estimates on the EVIC, it's a rolling average, not a total average. In other words the average MPG reflects the past 150-200 miles only. It does not calculate past that which is why it changes much more quickly than other make/models out there. I personally do not mind this as it helps me watch mileage trends. If it ran off of total miles since last reset I could have 5,000 miles since that reset and the average isn't going to change hardly at all which does not let me see that I have a bad tank of gas or whatever other issue I may have run into causing poor mileage. When you reset the average it does begin calculating at the point of the past average using it as a "base" so to speak.

The radio issue is caused by the non chrome emblems. If they were chrome, the radio would work. …. (Joke). I have night edition, and 12” screen/radio has now had three different issues. It wouldn’t go off after closing door. Now the screen won’t turn on sometimes even though the radio is on and working. But 2 hours later it works fine. (4K miles). Not gonna bring it in because it won’t happen at the dealer….

Hi David:
I have the same truck as you, '22 BigHorn 4x4, Night Edition, 3.92's,,,,

Based on some of the other replies, I agree the "realtime" mpg is an extrapolated rolling average based on how you're driving. For example, if I'm on the freeway rolling at 90mph, it just projects what that will do to MPH going forward. For the actual MPG based on real usage, that number is in the trip meter. So, trip meter is actual, the other is projected.

As far as the other quirks, I have had my screen go blank and confirmed this is definitely related to Apple CarPlay, its happen a couple of times.

Thanks for the input… Not to beat the MPG thing to death, but I’ll add this to it.

As seen in other MPG threads, your millage my vary.

I just completed a trip from Orlando FL to Beaufort SC and back. Mostly all highway, except the part between 95 to Beaufort. I reset my trip before leaving Orlando. I drive on the fast side of normal traffic. I use my cruise control when I can, between 78 and 82 and that is where I try to drive when not on cruise control.

One thing I’ll note is that my Ram is a quad-cab, not the crew-cab. It has the smaller back doors and the longer bed. Maybe there is a weight difference, I never looked it up. I’ll also add that I drive with an open bed, with the tailgate up.

The average for the trip was 19.0 mpg, not too bad on 89 gas. The overall average went up to 18.5. Again, not sure of the accuracy of the overall average. I know once I start driving in stop and go traffic it will go down to about 15 or less mpg.

As mpg goes, it seems to do best at around 80 mph.

That's pretty good mileage, I hoover around 80 MPH when driving as well. I'm also crew cab / longer bed. Did you see any difference in MPG after break-in and first oil change?

I might have seen a difference after a break-in, I'm not really sure. I think the noticeable difference was between 87 and 89 gas. I pretty sure I'm getting about 10% better mileage with 89. With the mid-grade running about 5% more in cost, it makes sense to use the 89. Plus, that is what's recommended.

We are mirroring our usage. I also run 89, I'm going to have my first oil change at 4K miles. Will use synthetic and add ProLong addictive. I've been using that on all my vehicles for 20 years and been very pleased with results.

I also change all the other fluids, rear end, tranny etc at 30K for the first change. The another 75K after that.
