What was the reason you purchased a RAM truck?

For me, I have to give a little background. In November, I was in a motorcycle crash that nearly took my life. After two months of hospital stays and rehab, I’m home but still recovering and learning how to walk again. When they woke me up the day after the accident, I looked at my lady and said, can I buy my dream truck now? :)

I’ve always dreamed of the truck I ordered. But that dream started as a young man when RAM changed their design, and the truck featured in the movie Twister is what sealed my deal but I think gives most guys the visual of what generation did it for me. Thanks in advance for sharing your story. While I wait for my truck and wait to recover to drive it I need some cool inspiration to help the time pass. Thanks guys and gals. Here is the rendering of my truck when it arrives. A RAM 2500 Night Edition. 6D9C81BA-57F2-4749-A4CE-AC503F84E0D1.jpeg

Well for me I was always a GM guy. Had a 1996 Sierra 1500 and was looking at a 2003 Sierra 1500 (it was in 2007). They wanted $23,000 for it with about 25,000 miles on it. So my son raced karts and we pitted with guys that worked for Chrysler. I showed up one weekend with a For Sale sign in my truck and they asked what I was buying. They then told me if I wanted a Ram they would give me their Friends and Family discount. Went to a local dealer and found a 2007 1500 Thunder Road with 4.7 and 3.92s. Sticker was about $35,000 but they had a $6000 rebate for the genral public then another $5000ish for Friends and Family so got it for about $24,000. Only $1000 more than a 4 year old 25,000 mile no warranty used truck. No brainer. After that traded it for a 2013 1500 Express then traded that for my 2018 2500 6.4.

KT, I wish you a quick and full recovery. I am glad you are getting the truck. I love the edition you are getting, it reminds my of my first car almost 40 years ago. ( as it was smoke gray with all the black out trim, deep tint windows etc.. and some cool OWL 60s tires. ) If , I would seen this truck, it would have sold me just bringing me back.

As for me and my truck, I used to change cars like underwear when I was young. But I noted half of the vehicles I owned, ( all cars ) had 4wd. Once you are there, its hard to have 2wd burner. As I have aged, and married ;) , I do not find the need to update cars so often. In fact, I had lost the desire or any interests in a new car, as none had inspired me. There was simply nothing that impressed or stirred me emotionally, Until one look at the RAM trucks. They are simply rolling art work. And then they upped the game with the 5.7 hemi, and loads of serious options and luxury trims. Simply, you can have the best of all of the worlds. For a guy who couldn't really even be satisfied owning a 2wd car, you can see that something that fills all the check boxes is a pretty steep order.

You simply cant get a real truck in an SUV today. There is simply nothing that excites me the way a full size truck can, but even with this, Chevy trucks have no appeal to me ( I sold chevy trucks for sometime ) and loved the two chevys I had. I am actually a chevy diehard due to my personal ownership experience. But the new trucks and suv's just didn't do it for me. ( especially the interior ) RAM upped its game with the 5gen on the interior. There is nothing not to like and want about these trucks. Simply , awesome trucks, and their sales accolades follow. Hey , welcome back RAM and Chrysler to your glory days of the 60-70s muscle cars.

Back in 2015 I was looking for a full sized pickup. I looked at the Ram, f150 and both Sierra and Silverado but I liked the looks of the Ram the best. I wanted to buy new but a friend of mine that worked at a local Ram dealer called me and said she was taking in an 11 Bighorn QC with low miles on it as a trade. I went and looked at it and wound up making the deal. It was a single owner 2011 I bought in 2015 and it only had 35k miles. They gave me a warranty with it as well. It was trouble free for me but I traded it in with 81k miles on it for my 2021 Spitfire orange Built To Serve

Well I was looking for a truck after driving my 1993 Corolla for 18 years which never gave me any problems but my wife and I were financially good after she bought her 2016 Lexus IS 200t f sport ...

So we took off one Saturday to the Hemet dealership here in Southern California, first dealership we went to was Chevy/GMC .... I told them I wanted either a Silverado or HD Denali and told them were I wanted my payments and how much money I was willing to give as down payment which was only $2000 to cover the tax and registration ...

The guy at the Chevy/GMC dealership said to get into any truck with them I would have to give over $15k and closer to $21k and payments around $1100 with a credit score of 850+ lol ..

I told the guy to fawkoff and was ready to go home but the Dodge/Chrysler/Ram dealership was right before the exit of the auto mall so I told my wife lets just stop for a bit, it was around 8pm already ..

Looked around saw a few used trucks but too many miles, some had damage, some had ripped interiors and some were the ecodiesel which I didn't want .... all were used trucks ... the salesman then said, "you know you would have an easier time getting into a brand new truck with the money you have and the price you are looking for as payment" .... so I said ok what do you have ....

We looked at some 2500 and 3500s but I was not looking to spend $75k+ for a truck ...then I saw a steel metallic big horn test drove it but noticed it was an ecodiesel, then saw another one that was black but was also ecodiesel, went through a few trucks but not the color I wanted and the salesman had me test drive an ecodiesel and I laughed after I drove it ...

I finally went back into the showroom saw my wife was tired and told her let's just go home .... the GM came out and saw I wasn't happy because I was dropping fbombs lol and he said "Gilbert are you going home without a new car?" I said yes, you don't have the truck I am looking for ... so he asked "what is it that you want?" ... I told him I wanted a Big Horn in Delmonico Red but a 5.7 not an ecodiesel ... he then looked at the salesman and said "go get the delmonico red in the back that I was going to get" the salesman said "but we don't have one back there" and GM said "yes we do go back there!" ...

I was seriously annoyed already and finally the salesman came back and said he had the truck outside if I wanted to drive it ... got in it, drove it, hit that gas pedal going down the long straightaway right outside the auto mall and when we got back I walked into the showroom my wife tired as hell but I had the biggest KoolAid smile and my wife said oh no its going to be a long night lol ...

When all was said and done, I got the truck for $42k, they knocked off a few thousand off of the total price with some rebates and first time buyer ... I only put down the $2000 and my payments under $700 on a 2018 Ram 1500 2wd Big Horn ....

We finalized everything around 1am and finally drove my side chick home ....

I couldn't be happier with this truck honestly, some things are a nuisance like the filler tube making the gas nozzles click off all the time but other than that everything is what I wanted in a truck .....

That's my story

I bought a Ram because a Chevy Truck salesman told me that 2009 Chevy trucks only had disc brakes on the front, i knew he was misinformed or flat out lying

Then i went to a Toyota & there were 5 or 6 salesmen staring at me from the shaded area of the building, they just stared at me & i looked at every style of truck they had & i had questions, they did not walk to me & i was not going to walk to them.
I was almost off the lot, pretty close to my 10 year old Chevy 1500, when 2 of the salesmen almost ran over to me. They asked if i needed help & i just told that i was looking for a new truck & i left.

Of course, i always shop in dirty work clothes & i was wearing a Camouflaged Military jacket because it was chilly.
I may have forgot to brush my hair

Man do I wish we had those discounts today. I too was a Chevy guy in College. Loved my 74’ GMC Sierra; it even had a dump bed on it. Previous owners added backhoe lights in the tailgate for loading snow machines in the winter. It was fun to flash when people would get too close ha.

@kayjo thanks for the positive spirit on my recovery. Each day I do something I couldn't do the day before so I'm a realist regarding the marathon of my recovery.

I'm also glad the build brought you back. This truck will be the second full size truck in my life. Like you I have had cars every few years, and this truck I plan to keep until the wheels fall off. I had a BMW Finance Manager friend of mine tell me that I should lease to protect my position on new tech. I told him if you chase technology like that you will be forever broke; the reality is you can never catch it. The technology in your truck is outdated the moment it was produced.

Thanks for your story; I truly appreciate it. See you on the threads.

Never anything wrong with used and thank you for sharing your story. Although I'm happy with the color I chose, that spitfire orange is damn sexy. Just something about it; maybe it bring me back to the general lee days, I dunno. Something does speak to me about it. Thanks again brother!

Haha, I really did LOL reading that. My side chicks were the motorbikes. My lady accuses me of spending more money on them than her shen I'm in the dog house, but it's then quickly forgotten about because its never true. Thanks for the positive spirit and I just can't wait to open that driver door and climb in for the first time.

My brother had a ford and I don’t care for Chevy. I always try to get something different than him lol. First was a 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Long Horn (Veronica)

Now a 2014 Ram 1500 Big Horn named Wilma.

I always think the Ram is a different breed of truck and the people behind the wheel of those trucks are a different breed of people. I always look at old or new rams as they pass by. I always think I bet that person is a good guy/woman. Ram people are tough and resilient.

Been dating someone who first told me I should go buy a Chevy. I thought we’ll this ain’t gonna work . She now likes rams I think haha

Like I see a Ram and automatically want to buy that person a beer

I'm a little jealous that you got a 6.7 and wish I wouldn't of gone with that now, but nevertheless I still love my truck and you are really going to love yours Kobo ...treat Her right and shell do the same ...

You and I must be neighbors - I'm also in the IE and when I started this process, now is not the time to try and buy a new truck...I was almost ready to sign (pre-contract) on pretty much the same truck you see in the picture, less a few extras which I was in take it or leave it mode. Regardless, 8K over which included the dealer addons, also not able to take those off (ripoff) - and my girl came running in saying she has a line on one in Vegas with 1K over MSRP - that was a no brainer. I was glad we did not but the one I thought I was contracting on and some other guy will get a great truck at a freaking crazy expensive price. It's the night edition that was making things really difficult for me. In the end, I'm super glad I went with the wait for what you want method and it seems guys who order as I did now are getting their trucks from this dealership within a couple of months. VIN is already assigned and just waiting for the confirmation that all the parts are sourced. Fingers crossed and I'm glad you got the truck you wanted, at a reasonable price.

Well played man. I hate that people in sales look at the outside package. When I dealer shop, I don't dress up. I go in with the ********* clothes I can find and walk out with the best deals possible. At first, I don't think they realize I'm not in it for their benefit. I never care what I look like, ever. One exception is events like a wedding or a job interview but I'm confident in my own skin so again, I don't care. Once they realize I'm serious and have some money and proper credit for top-tier financing I love the look on their face.

If I see you out there someday, beer will be in order for sure. It's interesting your comment about the type of people who my certain brands/machines. I've seen that with motorcycling and of course it's prevalent in the auto/truck community. I have also felt the same way about RAM owners and I hope to exemplify the community brand and spirit. Thanks for sharing brother.

Anytime man. I’m not a gear head like some folks on here but I’m putting 1 and 2 together as I go. I normally change my own oil but lately I’ve been putting 70+ hours at work. 12 hour days can get old but the money is nice to buy new stuff.

Nothing wrong with hard work and not working for me when I was completely immobilized really sucked. I believe in working hard and playing hard. Swinging the wrench has been a lifelong journey for me. I'm not an expert but I've rebuilt an engine or two and don't mind jumping into a job nowadays with the confidence of the internet as the best backup to a mechanic in the family. Back in the day for me, it was following a Haynes manual (not the best) but it worked because it was all I could afford to buy. Got the job done amazingly because I do understand the basics of engineering and the way an engine works...and I enjoy learning.

Just do you, do what you are comfortable doing and each time to do something new...take your time. Watch videos and read these boards...you will end up getting it done.
