Over the past 2 years (pandemic time), I decided to do some exterior upgrades to the 2015 Big Horn Crew Cab 5.7' bed Hemi. I started by removing the factory plastic bed liner. For those who wanted to know what it looks like under after about 7 years see the first 2 pictures.

I was hoping, and eventually had a baby on the way (he's been here 6 months now). Knowing I wouldn't be able to use the drivers side under rear seat storage because of the car seat base (I have the factory sub under the rest), I needed to be able to securely store cargo (including towing gear). I also needed to be able to carry gear in the bed (stroller, HD supplies,...) and keep them out of the elements. So, toolbox and a Tonneau cover was what I looking for.

I always wanted to Line-X the bed, I'm not a fan of plastic liners. The cargo mat helps all my stuff not slide around in the bed, since Line-X doesn't stop gear from sliding. The mat also keeps me from destroying my knees when I kneel in the bed of the truck.

I can have everything out of the bed in about 25 minutes, if I need full use of the bed. I put everything back in in just about the same amount of time.

Plastic liner removed after 7 years on the truck:

Very cool. I like how the bed turned out after the Line-X. I've been in thinking about replacing my drop-in bedliner with a spray one as well. Thinking about the various brands hearing some good and bad stories about each.
Line-X does seem to have the best rep. I've heard that Line-X is better to prevent dents happening if you accidentally drop something in like a couple of bricks. However there are those who swear by Rhino linings and now there is also Bullet Liner?

With all these choices, I'm wondering which is the one to do?

From the first time a saw Line-X, I knew it was the best product out there. This was about 15-20 years ago when I had a wrangler that I used to offroad. I did a DIY bedliner (herculiner) on the full interior of the jeep. I was wheeling with someone who did Line-X, I had seen several people do DIY (spray and roll), and people do Rhino, there was no comparison.

I even like Line-X over OEM. The OEM (at least for 4th Gen) is softer and more rubberized, but seems to grey very quickly (UV?). I went with Line-X premium, which they guarantee the finish from UV damage. I did spend more ($760) than ordering the truck with the OEM liner, I got my truck CPO, and selected this truck because of the 3.92 gears and it didn't have the OEM liner. I personally believe Line-X will be more durable over time, and I have the lifetime MaxCare warranty, so I will have this truck for a LONG time (if everything goes well).

Also, Line-X is everywhere, if I move (which I plan to in the next 5-10 years), I will be able to find a local dealer without issue.

I don't do "work" with this truck, at most, I will use the bed for loose dirt/mulch. I don't think I would ever transport bricks or drop heavy items in there. I have a 6x12 utility trailer that I will use for stuff like that. It makes it much easier to load and unload with the ramp. I probably will upgrade my trailer in the future (replace the axle with a heavier duty axle with brakes) and register it at a higher class (right now it is 2,990).

@JPT Seriously.. Looking at the pics of your truck has me missing my original grey 1500 SLT.

Thanks for the info. I looks like Line-X is then the best solution for me. I don't do much hauling and stuff, but I'd like to know that if I do put in a spray in bedliner, it will be able to take some abuse.

I'm very happy with my choice in Line-X, and although I keep seeing that the Gen 4's OEM is somehow a Line-X product, it is not the same product that people get when they get it sprayed after purchase at a Line-X dealer.

FYI, I graduated high school in Doha.

All of the 4th Gen Rams from 2009 - 2022 & possibly even earlier, all were built in Warren Michigan.
If anything like side steps, bedliner, etc. is suppose to be on those trucks,
They go through a Body Vendor, the body vendor that the Warren Plant uses is called GFX.Ltd
Line-X is a co-owner of GFX

WOW.. haha.. We were practically neighbors. I've been living here in Dubai since I was 5 years old. So I guess you understand the heat we deal with in this region during the Summer months.

Yeah, I've seen that. But that does not necessarily mean that it is the same product, or sprayed to the same thickness. Every time I've done a side-by-side comparison between a 4th Gen OEM vs Line-X authorized dealer spray job, they look and feel like different products. Nothing says that FCA didn't request a different product to fit their specifications...

Also from my research, it seems that the OEM applications only prep around the edges, making it more of a floating coating than a true coating.

But that is just my experience.

Yeah, when I was in high school we played varsity basketball outdoors... This was in the American old school (there is a new campus now). This was back when Qatari weekends were Thursday-Friday.

Looks good!!! I have a '16 with factory spray-in, bakflip, and bed rug. It is nice to have everything secure in the bed and not in the cab.

Why not move the child seat or car seat base to the passenger side? I have 2 kids still in car seats (3 and 6) so both sides are taken. I also have the sub under the passenger side but can loosen the driver side car seat enough to lift the seat slightly to reach under to get what I want. I hope this helps.

Thanks!

Because of the bench seat design. The 66% side is on the passenger side, the solo seat is on the drivers side. So, if I put the car seat base on the passenger side, I can't fold up the seat and use the big side fold flat floor.

When I'm not with my son, and I'm carrying loose groceries, they go on the fold flat floor.

I wish the configuration was reversed.

Has anybody gone with Rhino liner? I am getting my bed done in a few weeks and Line X is where I am going but was just wondering about how well Rhino has held up as well.

I've only seen Rhino lined beds years before I saw Line-X. It was enough of a difference (from memory) that I know I was going Line-X. But perhaps they made changes to their product to compete with Line-X...

I just got my 22 Rebel about a month and a half ago. I had factory liner in my 2018 and it greyed a bit, but not terribly and the tire wash in the coin carwash cleaned it up considerably. That being said, I went with Rhino liner through my dealer because apparently there is a shortage of the Line-X and factory product. In Canada at least. The Rhino seems thicker and more coarse to me so it’s less slippery. I am also adding a bed rug to save my old geezer knees. It’ll be a wait for the bed rug - approximately 80 days. May buy a new truck by then lol.

I've had Line-X in my Ram since about a week after delivery, so over 10 years. It's seen the occasional load of sharp/heavy things. Shovels scraping out mulch and landscaping rock, broken up furniture/construction debris for dump runs, trimmed branches and brush, etc. It's had *one* ding, on the tailgate a bit got gouged out by something or other, not quite to the metal. I think I did it sharpening a chainsaw on the tailgate, but it could have been a nail during a dump run. Line-X fixed it for free under lifetime warranty, no questions asked. You can see the repair as it's darker, but you'd have to be *really* **** to notice and care.

I think the factory bedliner is just "good enough" where they provide the minimum protection the auto manufacture thinks is acceptable. They balance between cost, and complaints from customers, and try to get as low as possible on both, but focusing on cost. Since they typically do not have to cover the liner beyond the original factory warranty.

When you get it aftermarket, especially if the bedliner company offers a lifetime guarantee, they are balancing between cost and likelihood of having to do a warranty repair. They can charge you what the aftermarket demands (more than OEM), and decide their profit margin per job, while trying to never have to do a repair over the lifetime expectancy of the vehicle (until the owner sells or wrecks the vehicle).

Between Rhino and Line-X, from my research (I could be wrong), is that Rhino and Line-X are similar products, but Line-X applies it a little thicker and demands a specific finish. In the videos you can see them spray from far away doing a final dusting, which creates that final finish. Also, it seems that Line-X installers require some kind of certification, ensuring that the product comes out to a specific standard every time.

But honestly, I don't think anyone would ever go wrong with Rhino or Line-X, they just seem to be a better prep/product than the OEM liner.

I did hear about Line-X having issues getting their product, I wonder why Rhino doesn't seem to have the same issue? Is it that Rhino has a better supply chain? Is it that Line-X is a better product that is harder to acquire? Is it that Line-X uses the same product as OEM, but has a different prep and spray than OEM, and all the materials are going to OEM?

Had it in my 05, I a metal clip from a dresser put a 2 inch cut into it and at the time it was only 6 months old and when I tried to get it repaired at nearest dealer was told I had to got back to installing dealer then some 1200 miles away ( so much for nation wide warranty) I will never have it in any of my trucks, but as they say YMMV

Yeah, that's the other thing. Line-X you can go to any dealer, you just need your original receipt (which I immediately scanned and saved to my googledrive account).
