Hello -

I am needing to do an oil change. I have been using Redline 5w30 and RP 20-820 filter. I have looked everywhere and can find a filter.

Can anyone point me where I can find one or the next best equivalent?

Appreciate it
Brian

Thanks Burla, After the reading I feel like I should receive some kind of certificate or something. Man you guys are really deep, although my Ram and I appreciate your knowledge.

Looks like I am going with the RP 20-500. Glad there arent any issues with RL 5W30.

Burla I believe I noticed you run RL 10w30, is that right? Why 10W30 over 5w30? Or is this another multiple page read?

A lot of what we did here was develop strategies based on science and then test them. Before you test it 10w30 looks like an incredible oil, great additive package and base oils like other redline but zero vii's per Dave. So you can see why the theory was it is every bit as good as 5w30 and even better, but then we tested it. It was the only redline I tried to date that had a slight tick the entire interval. It was like 10% of a tick compared to when I first got hemi tick, which is why I ran it for an entire interval, but no bueno. Now, if you don't have hemi tick or 10w30 happens to keep tick away, then there is a lot of benefits to running that oil in warm areas as there is no vii's which is desirable. Didnt work for me, but that doesnt mean it wont work for others. Most of the guys testing all of the different redlines were in cold states, so I believe I might have been the only one to try it, tbh I forget that part. I wanna say Ronnie ran it as well, rlk, but he didnt have hemi tick. I know he was really loyal to one specific redline, he is a helicopter mechanic so this oil really impressed him. His uoa's must be in blackstone thread, maybe that was 10w30, he was in warm state as well.

When I purchased this truck in 2017 I was living in New England. I am now in South Carolina and just stuck with the 5w30. I wonder if switching to 10w30 would be better now I am in a hotter climate. My RAM only has 27K miles on it as it does sit in the garage most of the time.

IMO it's the hths, redline as a company went to a thicker 5w30 then 10w30 when the oil is hot, hths measures shear with hot oil, so that butter smooth effect is really pronounced with 5w30. Plus in most uoa's there is no shear, meaning the vii's arent an issue. It's a close call, but 5w30 redline really is hemi honey imo.

It's not terribly hard to see if the 20-500 will fit or not, since it is thinner you only need to look at the bottom of the filter area, is there an inch extra from where you back the filter up? Or is their an obstruction that exists. You have to consider the depth with the current filter backed off position sitting on the threads, there is either an inch extra or there isnt. I wouldnt even bother to mention it as like I said the fram xg2 is a great option, but RP filter media was proven over fram ultra in my wife's car.

She has a cartridge filter otherwise we probably wouldnt know this information. I stored the filters in her truck, the fram ultra went stiff overtime with heat cycles in her trunk and the RP didnt, the rp cartridge media was like new even though it was in her trunk longer. The information we currently don't have is fram ultra xg2 cut open after a long interval, or at least a couple of them. It would be helpful if we did. The media that went stiff in the trunk was the pink/yellow fram ultra filter, the rumor is they upgraded. We either need someone who visits the walmart shelf to open the ultra box on a cartridge filter and note the color, it was be real helpful if someone bought an xg2 off the shelf and cut it open, if it is white you should be good to go, if not well there ya go. I almost did this, but personally I spent a lot of effort finding my filter and I'm very comfortable where I am at, but someone might consider doing this.

Look at the color of this media.

I cut open a FRAM Ultra XG2 and compared it with the Royal Purple 20-820 and posted these pics just very recently in the Oil Filter thread for everyone to view ... I'm not savvy at doing/posting videos, so I just posted a few random side by side comparison pics.

I'm up for an oil change in my HEMI that currently is on Red Line 5w/30 and an Royal Purple 20-820 and may just give the FRAM Ultra XG2 a try ...

I purchased another FRAM Ultra XG2 and XG10575. I want to see for myself if the XG10575 even will fit on my 2017 HEMI.

They are hard to find. I use the Fram XG2 instead as I can find those easily.
NEVER USE FRAM!! THIS IS THE WORST FILTER YOU CAN RECOMMEND. THEY ARE GARBAGE. I USE TO USE THEM UNTIL I HAD A FAILURE THAT COULD HAVE BLOWN THE ENGINE. NOT ON MY RAM I USED IT ON ANOTHER VEHICLE.

CALL SUMMIT RACING. I PURCHASE THE REDLINE OIL AND THE ROYAL PURPLE FROM THEM. OR SOMEONE SAID CALL ROYAL PURPLE THEMSELVES. NEVER USE FRAM. I ALMOST LOST AN ENGINE DUE TO FILTER FAILUE. THE AUTO PARTS GUY I DEAL WITH SAID HE HEARD THE SAME COMPLAINT FROM HIS OTHER CUSTOMERS. IF YOU CAN'T GET THE ROYAL PURPLE GET A MOPAR FILTER. I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON CARS AND TRUCKS FOR 50 YEARS AND WAS A FORMER FORD MECHANIC. DO NOT USE FRAM OR ANY OTHER FILTER!!

I haven't done extensive research like some have, but I am on my 3rd hemi and second 6.4. At least with the 6.4, and this probably won't be a popular answer, the best outcome in reducing/eliminating startup chatter and other common hemi symptoms the stock Mopar filter has been the best for me. Noticable better than others I tried.
