Saw this on a auto blog today. Makes me cringe. Apparently this couple has had this RV in back of this 3500 for 25k miles until this happened. FCA is denying warranty on the frame.

I just posted this because of a friend sent me the same pic in a text message. MY guess would be because that camper with all of his gear in the back he would be overloaded. The specs on the camper he is carrying says the dry weight of that camper is 4917lbs. Probably more than that if he optioned it out. That would be my guess...

Think the article said the camper was around 6500lbs loaded.
If that's the load out on that, then he was overloaded. The 3500 DRW Cummins trucks usually have a payload around 5200-5500lbs., on average, some higher, some lower from what I've seen. Mine has a 6292lbs., payload on the sticker (Hemi truck). I wouldn't run anything that heavy.

This is what happens when you listed to sales people and then fail to be diligent by visiting a scale to be 100% sure of the weight...

6500 payload, but that is evenly spaced in the bed , not hanging off the tailgate. Looks like most of the weight is behind the axle considering the break point.

Kind of looks like operator error.

I don't think this was just an overweight issue, speculation of the tie down points were improperly drilled in or even weld on.

That and where he was driving didn't help. could have broken that truck overloaded or not.

Was reading the story. " I did lots of research blah blah" If he did actually research, he would know what payload really was on the Truck he purchased.
Claiming it's ram dealer/rv dealer's fault. I'm sure he told them. I'm going to hang motorcycle off it, go drive in baja.

People like this is why I started explaining towing and payload capacities. People like this is why I stopped. No one wants to hear the truth about their purchase and everyone wants to continue with false information.

I have seen many like this...ford Chevy dodge etc. It is usually from an improper weld or attachment coupled with the overloading and wrongful loading...but, things have a breaking point. They do not just make these numbers up.

As of the 2015 model year those number got real, by that I mean it was the first year the entire Ram truck line up(including HD trucks) complied with the SAE J2807
Toyota was the first to do this a couple years prior but before then it was sorta the wild west in the terms of the numbers a manufacturer would state what a truck could tow and haul.

And there was another pic that made the rounds from a guy in Mexico where his camper broke the frame in half. Can't find the picture right now. Abig camper, but supposedly lightweight.

There are Ford Superduty's doing the same thing

Wouldn't common sense tell you that something with that much overhang isn't a good idea?
Physics wins every time.
THIS. all that weight behind the axle, all that weight at the front...add in some bumps...like snapping a stick. I'm surprised it lasted that long.

So, you mean to tell me that the people that engineered and designed these trucks know what they are talking about when they rate the trucks for payload capacity? And if you exceed these weights, bad things, such as cracking frames and whatnot can occur? What a crazy thought!

I had no idea you could actually break the frame rails. I have seen some over loaded trucks before, especially in the campgrounds.
