Hi all new member been reading for a few months now. I have a 2011 ram 1500 5.7 had the failed #8 lifter. So I installed new
Cam
Lifters
Valve springs
O2 sensors
Plugs with copper core ngk
Crank sensor cam sensor
I'm at a lose here. The truck will start however the cel flashes and it will not idle for long. Yet it smooths out and runs like a sewing machine above 1800 rpm. I think it's misfiring on cylinders 4 6 8 and 5 could my timing be off??? I triple checked the timing when I was putting it all back together. Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Sounds to me like you've got your cam timing off. Did you use a piston stop when you install the cam to find true TDC?

Yep...sounds like a timing issue. Have you thrown a P0016 code yet?

I put the engine at tdc with the head off and the only code I got was p0300 thanks for the help. I wanted to make sure before I pulled the timing cover and water pump and all the happy stuff that goes along with it.

So just to be clear once I get the cover off I was gonna use a socket extension to get to tdc then set the cam to tdc throw the chain around it and let the tensioner loose. After I do that how many rotations should I turn the motor by hand.

Two full rotations should put you back at tdc. Also did you check your pushrods? I threw a p0307 when the intake push rod wasn't in the cup

Did you put your lifters in correctly? Making sure the MDS lifters are in the MDS cylinders? I've seen this multiple times where the lifters are installed in the wrong position causing a misfire up until higher rpms because of the oil pressure increasing.

P0300 is a multiple cylinder misfire. Did you line up the timing marks when you put it back together?

Yes just re did the timing all good same problems. I'm pretty sure I put the lifters in correctly. I can remember now off the top of my head which ones I put them in. I'm almost positive they are in correct spots though I remember double checking

So 4 weeks ago I had the #3 lifter fail and tore up the cam. I have a 2012 Ram 1509 Sport. Bought it used in 2015 (had 86000 when purchased). It now has 186,000.

I replaced all the lifters the cam, the tensioner, guide, lower sprocket, the chain, water pump (had a slight wobble in the pulley). Put it all back together and it wouldn’t start. Went through it again checking connectors, spark is all good. It was throwing p0300, p0325, p2182, p2172. Checked for vacuum leaks and could find none. Tried spraying the intake manifold and vacuum lines and throttle body with carb cleaner. It would start eventually and reluctantly but had to keep it around 2000 rpm.spent 4 full days troubleshooting finally saw the harmonic dampener had a signicant wobble. Finally found one an replaced it today. Thought it was going to fix it, no luck. Now been at this for 4 weeks. I have replace the MAP sensor still no luckI am out of work and can’t afford to start swapping parts.

Any ideas? Throttle body? Any way to test or things to observe? I don’t know what else to check. Could it be the intake manifold?

Did you ever figure out the issue? I replaced cam and lifters in my 2010 with non MDS stuff. Also tuned out with diablosport tuner. Misfiring on 6,7 and 8.

Go through the simple stuff first...

Are all of the ignition coils plugged in?

Are all of the fuel injectors plugged in?

If you are having a Cylinder #6, #7 and #8 misfire after the repairs, I would pull the rocker covers off and visually inspect the pushrods and make sure they are seated in the rockers. Did you use the HEMI pushrod special tool to install the intake pushrods or did you just line them up and bolt them down? It is really easy to miss the intake pushrod while installing the intake rockers.

Weve checked EVERYTHING short of tearing it back down. We didn’t use the tool but all the pushrods are opening the valves. New gapped plugs, coils are good, injectors are good. Had somebody hook up their live feed scanner to it and everything seems fine other than the obvious misfire. These misfires were only AFTER the new cam and lifters. Has non MDs cam and lifters along with the MDs delete tune

Very possible some of the lifters aren’t fully seated. They can be pretty tricky to get seated fully into the lifter pocket. Have you taken the valve covers off?

What of those codes are active when running it?

Yeah we’ve taken the valve covers off and watched the valve train run and it seemed flawless. I do know that we didn’t check to see if a rocker arm has gotten wedged under the hold down bolt. Only code is P0300 or something. It’s “random multiple cylinder misfire” although it isn’t very random it’s always 6,7 and 8
