same here. i too believe its piston slap. my 15 was loud even at about 8k. especially when temps got down below 40 degrees outside. it happened not after initial cold start but while it was warming up. say about 120-170 degrees. unreal. it was a lease and i couldnt wait to unload that thing...
to hell with the dealers....
just hit 14k on my 17. 12,500 of it has been on redline 5/30. no hot tick, no start up tick. and not even a restart tick after moving it across a driveway a couple of times. oil is at 49 psi at idle hot about 210F. so far so good. thankfully.
as coach John Gruden...
sorry to hear that...
please keep us posted.
my short of it is this.
had a 15 on lease with gradual increase in ticking louder and louder and to boot crazy piston slap. dumped it at 27k.
bought a 17 as a leftover in 4/18. dumped the stock oil at 1,500 miles. been on redline 5w30 ever since due...
hey Beast,
i had a new 15 on a lease and gave it back with 27k. if you search for my older posts, that thing made such noisy piston slap on cold days approx. starting between 115-120 degrees on dash gauge. it would go away at about 180. and dont even get me started with bleed down and hot tick...
this is a copy of a post i put up not too long ago on how i feel about MDS
"speaking just specifically from a "design" point of view, the MDS is a very intelligent concept.
However, from a purist or connoisseur's perspective, it's a complete and utter sacrilege to the HEMI's character. i myself...
i run a mufflex 18 inch bolt in.
nice and mellow tone and when you get on it, it opens up nice with a good growl. took me 1/2 hr. to install. couldnt be happier.
bought my 2017 in 4/18 as a leftover. my brother inlaw works there. they made a sweet deal when i dropped out of my lease on my 2015. And yes, the factory oil filter was a bear. but nothing a big pair of channel locks cant handle.
i was offered 6 oil changes as well at time of purchase. i never showed up.
i feel the most safest way and one that leaves absolutely no doubt is to do it yourself. which i do.
i just slide under it in my driveway. filter is a PITA but nonetheless quite manageable. leaves no head scratching...

oil- 206F
