Loosely crumble some aluminum foil along the edge leaving it tall. Close the hood then open it and see how much the foil compressed. That’s how much gap you have between the hood and your filter housing.

I saw on the Diablo forum someone recently asked this question and the Diablo tech said that shutting off the MDS doesn't harm anything. Seems like a bold answer for a company rep if he wasn't sure about it.
