I use a 3/8 ratchet with 4" extension and a swivel, along with a spark plug socket. Gets in there easily. I hand turn the extension until the threads are engaged.
I used Infinity Kappa speakers when doing my stereo.
3 1/2 in the dash.
6x9 three way in the front and 6 1/2 component in the rear.
On the 6x9, I had to slice around the opening and tap the sheet metal to clear the speaker frame. This was easier than I thought and no big deal.

Did you do the compression check for both rings and valves? Rings, all plugs out and check. Valves, all plugs out, squirt some oil in. If compression improves, rings are bad, no improvement, valves are bad.
