I'm sure the same engineers that thought of this, also thought to have an easily serviceable fuel filter to catch all the crud that will get introduced to the fuel system via the "trapdoor" entrance.
As long as the owner paid the bill for fixing the damage I'm cool with it. But, if the insurance company paid, it's ********. It's things like this that drive up the cost of insurance, paying for frivolous claims.
