Indeed...it really shocked me when I figured it out. FWIW...I've got a second battery on this one, connected via cables through the firewall to the back (jump) seat, where the second battery sits. We're doing that to support the expanded comms gear, lighting, and a hefty inverter.- TeamKDRT

I know this sounds incredibly simplex, but it is the same circumstances as yours, and this is what happened. Same '97 truck/engine, same behavior, and here's what got it "all better." Had to wash out the fuel tank (so many years of sitting, and there was crap in the bottom). Replaced the fuel...- TeamKDRT

Occasional stalling without code
Does that engine use an Idle Air Control valve? I had a very similar issue with my 5.2 over time, in that it ran well, but would die on idle (as with you), and if it idled, it was 500 or so and iffy. Now it's 700 or so, and steady. No stalls. IAC is on the firewall side of the throttle body on...- TeamKDRT

Project truck - where's the horn fuse?
Did some circuit tracing and find that, unless I want to restore the truck to OEM (I don't...it's gonna be a disaster response vehicle), it'll cost a bunch to replace all the elements of that circuit chain just to get a functional horn...which had become a serious consideration as the truck has...- TeamKDRT
