Hello

I bought a 2012 Ram 1500 with the 4.7 l, V8. I was getting ready to do an oil change on the weekend and noticed a size difference with the oil filter on the truck.

The oil filter that was given to me is about 4" in diameter and about the same in length. I have checked many filters for this truck and this is the one they recommend.

The filter on the truck is a lot smaller around and longer. When I cross referenced the number on the filter on the truck, it comes back as being the one for the 3.7 l, V6. This filter fits the mounting flange on the truck perfectly, if I were to use the larger filter it would be bigger than the mounting bracket.

My question is, why do they have the smaller filter on the truck, did they change something on these trucks at some point.

And before you ask, it is a 4.7 L, V8, it is written on top of the engine and there are 8 spark plugs in the vehicle.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

The Wix filter catalog online has dimensions of all of their filters.

You are correct, the V6 filter is smaller diameter and longer. But its only spec-ed for the V6. The 4.7 and 5.7L V8 engines use the same filter, which seems to be the size of the one you purchased.

The V6 filter probably worked OK because it has the same center thread pitch, diameter and size. But, at least Wix, says its not the correct filter for V8 applications. It doesnt show any notes about build date changes or anything. Maybe someone changed the flange on the truck to match the smaller filter for some reason?

I may be able to offer some clues, stemming from my experience with my 2015 1500 (HEMI).

I was experiencing a drip, and the dealer told me there is a “flaw” in the design with the smaller filter. Now, as a matter of practice, the dealer is using a larger filter at the recommendation of a service bulletin.

Additionally, when changing the oil make sure that the tech (or you) cleans the area as residual tends to sloppily pour out and wet the underside.

There are a few threads related to this topic, and I have seen Royal Purple as a recommended brand to resolve risk of any drip from the MOPAR application.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. I am wondering if it matters if the oil filter overhangs the flange on the outside. There is a slight difference in the gasket size, but it would still seat on the flange fine.

As long as the gasket seats and seals against the flange, all is fine. The body of the filter may protrude past the flange, and that's ok.

Right now it has 5w20 and rislone
First off change you're oil, you should be running 5/30. Secondly the rislone is probably just thinning you're already thin oil. How many miles on engine? You might want to go with 5/30 high mileage oil.

Read the quieting hem tick thread in my sig. It could be exhaust bolts.

I would go with either M1, Castrol edge, either one in a high mileage formula, then add a Fram ultra or M1 filter. That's if you want to stay with off the shelf oils. 5/30 redline would be a good choice but you have to realize that on high mileage engines it will probably take awhile to work. That's saying that the oil is the problem in the first place, I've heard several 4.7's that tic.

I bought a royal purple oil filter but haven't put in on yet. Will get high mileage 5w30 oil and change it all then. This oil filter is suppose to have anti drain back valve.

Do I need to buy 5w30 synthetic high mileage oil?
What oil did this engine have in it most of its life? If it's had synthetic in it then yes synthetic high mileage. If it's been on conventional oil I'd stay with conventional high mileage at this point. Changing from conventional to synthetic now may give you some issues with oil leaks, however the high mileage part may help. If it was mine, and this is strictly my opinion I'd go with synthetic high mileage. The RP filter is a good choice, I didn't mention it because around here they're not readily available.

Dodge dealer has changed it 2 times. I don't know what they use.
They more than likely use a Mopar filter which is nothing special. Been many reports that people's engines have ticked the most with Mopar filters. Oil, depends on the dealer, some use Mopar oil which is relabeled Pennzoil, some use the cheapest bulk oil they can get. If they were the ones that put 5/20 in it that tells you something right there, it's specd for 5/30.
