Do any of you guys know what is the safe operating temperature I have the 5.7 5 l with I believe the 5-speed transmission and I'm kind of stuck in traffic and my temperature is 156 degrees is that normal?

Yeah I wouldn't worry about that temperature.

*EDIT* Unless that is 156 degrees in Celsius. If its Fahrenheit than there shouldn't be a problem.

Anything under 220 and you have no worries, as in zero. The 8 speeds run hotter, your transmission will likely not over heat unless there is some type of issue or are towing heavy.

Not knowing what year your truck is, are you sure you have the 5spd? I just did a service on mine (2009 5spd), so I've been watching it closely the last few days. It's been running about that temp when in traffic. I was a bit concerned at first, but it seems that 180 is supposedly "operating temp". Don't think I'd worry about it.

Also, from what I've read, the 545RFE (5spd) like to be maintained. The book says the first real service is at 120k, but many other online sources say that regular fluid changes are good.
