Just replaced the water pump on my 99 5.9 because it blew the gasket and was pouring coolant. I got the new one on today, new gasket and everything went smooth. Idled it to normal op temps and no leak. Drive it around the block and the leak came back. Have checked hoses and appears to be coming from the bottom just above the crankshaft pulley. Out of options and dont know where to go from here with it.

Could it be the pump itself leaking from the weep hole?

Can't know where you got the pump from. If it is over the counter national parts store,,,,,,,more than possible you got a new or reman bad one.

Got it from oreillys. It seems to be working though. Ive been watching the temp and it will get to normal op temp and then drop back down. Im starting to think the timing cover is warped too along with the old water pump.

Ok that would tell me that the water pump and thermostat are working correctly. So finding the leak is one of those eyeball and shop light challenges. Just make sure that the leak is not coming from the weep hole in the new pump. If it is,,,, exchange.

I would check that weep hole extra good. Water pumps are one of those things you buy aftermarket and its a 50/50 shot if its good or bad. Especially if you got the cheapest one. I put a decent quality water pump in a 1990 F150 I had and it didnt even make it 2000 miles, if that.

Also, did you get the gasket surface completely cleaned off when you installed it? No pieces of old gasket left on? Just something that may be worth taking back apart for a second look.

You may double check the thermostat gasket/housing and make sure its not leaking. I know you didnt mention that you took it apart, but just double check if its leaking.

Out of curiosity, what makes you think things may be warped? What would have caused said warpage?

How quickly is it leaking? gushing will be the seal to the timing cover. slower but steady leak is very possibly coming from the heater tube in the side. Often goes unnoticed.

It leaks when i shut it off, seems like when its running it doesnt leak. I wouldnt say gushing but usually end up with a good size puddle of coolant underneath the truck.

Isnt the thermostat on the top of the motor though? This is the first dodge ive had, so im not completely familiar with this motor yet. Pretty sure i got it all cleaned off. Discounted price on a decent pump through an account and just a thought it may be warped bc i have no clue how hot the guy before me ran it. It was completely low on coolant when i bought it.

Yes. Right on top, behind the pump I believe. Havnt messed with a magnum in a while. Should look like a flange with a radiator hose running into the top of it, two bolts, one on each side of the flange. I doubt its the problem, just worth a once over.

Could be a hose of some sort leaking as said above. Also worth a once over of the hoses.

If your certain that its only leaking when its not running, then that to me says probably not a gasket problem. Though i dont know how you could be completely certain its not leaking when running, unless you watch while its idling.

That being said, It could still be the water pump. I have heard of water pumps leaking through the weep hole when not running. Never personally seen it, just heard of it so take that with a grain of salt.

Shouldnt be all that hard to track down a coolant leak though. Crawl under her and start looking and feeling around.

Just checked and yeah its leaking while its running, its almost like theres not enough pressure to keep it against the timing cover. Ut its only leaking from that bottom side. Nowhere else that ive seen.

Sounds like you are going to have to pull it back off and make sure gasket surface is completely clean. And if it is good and clean, then it very well may be warped.

Actually wondering now if its possible to be getting too much pressure buildup and blow those gaskets.

So now the water pump is sealed right, but its leaking behind the timing cover a good bit? Any clue on cost to repair? Im going to ha e to send it to a shop since my work schedule is chaotic and dont have the time to or tools to do it.
