need to replace the rear differential on an 06 hemi 2x4 quad cab. The cross reference salvage book says there are 2 different axle housings. Round or square outer flanges. Is there actually any real difference if you replace The Whole thing??
392:1 gear.

Yes, it matters, in how the brakes mount to the axle. You need to determine if you have square or round flanges, and stick with what you have.

Nice illustration. Thanks. I think someone stuck the round one in mine right before I purchased it and I am not sure which it originally had. It barley made it home. Had to dump motor oil in it half way home and pinion is loose now. Makes amazingly horrible noises. Thought for sure I was going to be using AAA. The salvage yard only has the square flange one with the 3.92 posi. And it’s actually out of a 2006. But it includes everything including brakes. Any chance it works?

If it comes complete with the brakes, then I would assume it would be a simple swap.

If it comes with everything (down to the calipers and rotors), then yes, it should swap right in. It would be a matter of disconnecting the driveshaft, u-bolts, brake lines, and e-brake. Pull the old one out, and slide the new one in.

Cross checking that my truck did indeed come with anti spin differential rear axle. The rear differential looks recently installed but is an open one legged one.

Great conversation! Would this be an example of square rear axel flange? Fyi, it’s a 2007 5.7 4x4 Bighorn w/ 160,000 that’s already had the rear end replaced once... and about to be again. It’s also had the tranny done and the half shafts. Wife keeps asking how much I’m putting into it. I tell her I have to make it run again!

The reason I ask, is because I personally don’t know by looking hw to tell the difference between round and / or square brake flanges. Fyi, the vin decoder on Dodge’s website spit out a great pdf of the equipment list. It listed 3.92 gear ratio for the back axel.

Yes, that’s a square axel flange.

I am glad I signed up and found this thread. I have horrible sounds from my rear axle and have for some time so I rarely drive it, but my problem is I am not sure the rear end is original and have been doing my research to find out if it is 3.55 or 3.92. This thread answered my square or round axle flange. Mine is round. I do not want to put the wrong ratio axle in it but I Dodge and they told me there should be a 3.92 in here. I have no tags on either axle, I have vin decoded, nothing!
How do I tell which axle ratio is on the front so I can match the rear?

I have already ruled out ujoints, axle shaft, replaced rotors, etc. I took off the rear differential cover and found metal slivers plus the gears must be lightly scraping the inside of the diff cover!! Ouch!! I also have a little play in the bearings behind the housings on each side. Ugh I need answers, lol.

Oh boy, the infamous scratches on the inside diff cover. Time for a rebuild.

Yeah I remember when I discovered mine a year ago. Glad I finally rebuilt it and I just did a second rebuild on my 03 rcsb because those gears didn't even catch each other lol

So the easiest way to figure out what your ratio is, is to count the teeth on the ring gear and then count the teeth on the pinion gear and divide the teeth on the ring gear by the teeth on the pinion gear. That will give you your diff gear ratio currently in your truck
Ex. My ring gear has 41 teeth and my pinion gear has 9 teeth so 41/9 and then I get 4.55555 so my gear ratio is 4.56:1
