is this typical for a 2017ish ram 2500? At first, i thought they were just a bit rusty for sitting a couple days. but, it's still there!

i have hauled a 8000lb RV for about 2000 of those miles. Still, seems like really fast wear if that's what it is.

Mine have done it off and on since new, and so have many others. I’m at 72K miles with no signs of needing replacement.

It just may need some copper grease on the pad backing plates.

Have you measured the pad thickness?

I agree...18K is way too early to have worn down pads unless there is another problem, such as a stuck caliper pin.

Mine were squealing like crazy by around 10k. I had enough and bought good front and rear ceramic pads. The factory puts metallic pads on from the factory. I am assuming because they are a little cheaper. The best is, all the time you spend cleaning the black brake dust off your wheels can be put to a stop. Ceramic are not only silent, they also create virtually no brake dust. In my opinion, they perform a lot better.

Mine were terrible around 35k miles. Finally got synthetic brake pad grease, took them apart and greased the back of the pads. Still have an occasional sqeauk at low speed and low pressure, but the horrible squealing is gone.

Yep same here. Mine squealed like crazy from about 25k to 30k miles and then one day they just miraculously stopped squealing. Pads still look brand new. Strange. It got so bad I was shopping new pads but luckily they stopped. Hoping they stay quiet.

Ceramics aren't recommended in HD applications. Ceramic brake pads lack the temperature range especially in severe conditions. Metallics (high quality semi-metallics) are preferred for heavy towing and performance racing. That's why they are OEM on these big trucks, not necessarily because they are cheaper. A set should last the greater portion of a 100K service interval if all the brake components are working properly. Mine look brand new at 20K miles having towed half those miles. Won't be surprised if I get to 75K before I start thinking "brake job".

I’ll be surprised if you need them that soon.

I apologize. I do not know why I said "because they are a little cheaper". I understand that for heavy-duty and performance that semi-metallic is best. It just produces a lot of brake dust and noise. On my vehicles I have always used ceramic. In my truck, the most I tow is a trailer with a few thousand pounds max or, very rarely, a trailer with a car on it, and I do not do any performance driving. I have never noticed a difference, but I obviously do not tow a lot of weight constantly.

Exactly this for me (noting I have a 1500, not a 2500). Same issue, same fix, same continuing low speed / low pressure squeak.

Ceramic pads are ok, but I avoid them because they chew up rotors. I'd rather deal with some brake dust than replace rotors early especially in a HD truck. Ceramic pads are harder and don't stop as well in my opinion. Just my .02.
