Why is it that the max tow rating for a 3500 dually is 31,210 while a 4500 chassis cab is only 24,650? Is the chassis cab set up more for payload over towing?

Engines are rated differently in commercial chassis than regular pickups. I think the Cummins is only rated for 730ish but don’t hold me true to that vs the 930 l or whatever they have rated w the 3500.

I think your on the right track. For some reason, the cab chassis engine is derated. There is a reason I can't think of here at the moment.. Good obervation though. If I were to have a 4500 with an aluminium stake body on it i would think it'd tow just as well as a 3500.

I asked a similar question to our dealership when buying the latest f350 service truck.. the answer I got was the derating and the rear frame over hang/leverage...this is a dealership so it’s likely way off target
